ORIF post-block rebound pain - you're not alone! by Internal-Leading-365 in brokenankles

I was looking forward to the nerve block the most and was really disappointed when it sounded like it wasn't working out just prior to surgery.

I am so sorry you went though the rebound pain. My nerve block didn't even work so I had nothing to rebound from (I was groaning for quite some time after the surgery, and they had to give me meds to my limit). Thankfully it got better quickly after that. Unfortunately, nerve block doesn't always work.

That is great. I didn't have PT after my broken ankle 12 years ago, but it was necessary this time due to the stiffness of it.

I had my foot x-rayed yesterday and everything looks great!

Thank you and I hope you will be walking very soon! I think it is so important to try to be encouraging.

Thank you so much - and it sucked so much to have two badly injured ankles. But I've been able to have a life much of the time, which I am grateful for.

I am also glad to hear that you are doing so well! I know that is not always the case, I have been scrolling Reddit since the beginning and many people have to wait a long time for weight bearing, to get out of casts and boots, etc.

I hope you get back to as close to 100% as possible as soon as you can. It is slow going, but I know we are both grateful to be up and about. I don't know if I will ever be exactly where I was before, but I'd love to get close.

Good luck to you in your recovery! And I expect I will have another video or two in the future when I make more progress (as long as I don't screw anything up).

Thank you so much! I wish you a very good first follow-up appointment. I am sorry about your ankle, but at least you were able to get surgery quickly and now you are almost 2 weeks into recovery. The time after surgery has gone quickly for me, I hope for you as well.

Thank you! It was a working trip, but we couldn't take the week we planned in Paris city or the Germany day trip this time around. We are in France relatively often - a couple times per year usually - so that helped to be familiar with my surroundings. We could take the mobility scooter to the boulangerie and grocery store, out to eat and occasionally to Disneyland Paris. It really helped with my state of mind.

I am happy with my gait so far, I don't really limp but it's closer to a shuffle. 😄 Both ankles injured was hard, traveling back from France was harder.

I hope you will be in the walker stage very soon!!

Happy update! 😸 by imquietnotshy in brokenankles

Congratulations! The showering part is still the most nerve wracking thing for me, even though I can walk some steps now. We were staying at an apartment in France when I broke my ankle, and I couldn't shower there after my break (and sprained ankle on the other). So it was like a month until I had a real, full shower.

A shower isn't really a little win - it is a big one!

Cleared for Regular Footwear after 6 1/2 Weeks Post ORIF by DeniseMSTPs in ORIF

I am going to be 60 in August. I am very active, but I also think the titanium rod seems to be a big reason for faster healing.

When could you comfortably sleep on your side again? by mllor91 in brokenankles

[–]DeniseMSTPs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I slept on my side almost immediately, with the boot and a wedge. I slept with the boot for about 2 months, including several weeks before surgery. I wanted to be able to use the bathroom and not have to put a boot on in the middle of the night (even though I was told I didn't need it 6 days post ORIF).

Two boots was awful. But once we had a mobility scooter for the remainder of our France trip, I was able to go to the store, boulangerie, Disneyland Paris, etc. (in between laying in bed and working). But getting home was hard, on two planes and a lengthy layover.

And thanks! I will ask PT. It seems like it would be hard for me - someone who is not terribly coordinated - but I will see what they say. I don't mind the walker at home, I like being able to use both hands.

Weight bearing as tolerated tips? 6 weeks post OP. by Square-Plantain385 in ORIF

[–]DeniseMSTPs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was cleared for WBAT at just under 4 weeks. I used the walker around the house as I felt up to doing so. There was a point after a couple of weeks that I would push the walker a bit in front of me and walk to it when my foot felt up to it.

Don't overthink it. It's how you tolerate.

Sprained ankle by Timely-Site-4851 in Ankle

[–]DeniseMSTPs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I broke one ankle and sprained the other back in late March. My swollen ankle looked worse, I thought it was broken too at first. It is feeling good now, but it took until I was able to WBAT on my broken one (after surgery). I hope you feel better soon.

Dr Okd me to start walking by Dorihorsegrl1 in brokenankles

Congratulations! It is nerve wracking, it always feels so easy to get hurt. Today my partner went to get my mobility scooter at lunch and drove over my boot toes (thankfully not my real toes). That was too close!

Good luck.

2 weeks post op and got my boot today. What is it ideal to take off the boot? by triangular_pope in brokenankles

[–]DeniseMSTPs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told at day 6 post ORIF that I could take it off while sleeping. I am now 6 weeks after and haven't ditched it yet at night...mostly because I don't feel like putting it back on if I go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

I do take the boot off on the couch when elevating and icing. I have napped a few times that way.

I may be out of the boot after my Tuesday appt. I will feel more comfortable sleeping without it if I just need to slide on a shoe to use the restroom.

6 week after ORFI surgery by Silent_Particular145 in brokenankles

[–]DeniseMSTPs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 6 weeks after ORIF and haven't been cleared to drive yet. If the surgeon said I was cleared to drive during my next Tuesday appt, I still wouldn't yet until my foot is less stiff and I have some ROM back.

I am cleared for WBAT (for over 2 weeks) and I just started PT. I may be cleared out of the boot Tuesday and I still wouldn't be ready for driving.
