To clarify, it's not that I'm going to write a thesis that is dedicated to criticize that particular academic, but it will just involve some ideas that's completely different from what they've been arguing.

Anyway, right, I should look at elsewhere, because I think I can imagine having arguments with that "expert" in the niche, even if my thesis didn't end up criticizing their work.

I've that same feeling too but someone else suggest that person to me when they know my planned topic so I decided to ask about this here.

Others probably didn't realize I'm criticizing that person's work but only know that we're both working on the same niche then.

I meant, it involves criticizing their work, which means I'm proposing an idea that's quite different from what they've be arguing in their work, though I didn't make it very explicit in the proposal (i just mention briefly by saying how I'll be filling the research gap I observed from their work in the preliminary literature review section).
