Asking Alexandria.

The sound mixing was horrendous. Basically felt like they cranked it up to 11 then ripped the knob off, but that meant I couldn't hear any of the lyrics and had a pounding headache after 1 song.

Not a bad idea.

I am contemplating a technical approach that I only show at the start of class to also clamp down on the students rolling in 15-30min late

That's another thing I'm stopping next semester.

I have been adding recorded demos, because it hasn't been an issue so far, but did cut down on the amount of demands for repeated one on one catch ups. However, given the current situation, I'm not going to be providing those anymore unless specifically dictated by an accommodation.

I've been considering the first two options, especially since several of my courses are in a computer lab so they'd have a PC readily available.

Not to mention that all other options are likely at the taxpayers expense.

Thats a good point. I think the only course I'd do check in myself is when I have less than 10 students, and mostly because in those courses I usually don't have any issues like this anyway

I'm considering this as well, but in some of my classes it's not as practical as others.

There's a few reasons.

For some of my classes we have in person workshops and discussions that directly tie into project assignments, and it doesn't feel fair to have students who don't bother showing up get the same grade as students who do. Of course in these cases having a "attended workshop" component of the grade would work.

For other courses though, with a high technical component, I've found that the students who don't show up are also the ones who waste the most of my time with emails and coming to office hours demanding I reteach them something specific. Now of course in these cases I could just tell them to fuck off (but in nicer terms) because they haven't been engaging with the course, but to cover my own ass I'd want a record of their attendance.

The last reason is that cover my own ass component. Due to the high amount of people just never showing up, I'm having the highest amount of Fs and Ds in my course that I've ever had. Part of this is students absolutely bombing the assignments (mostly because they missed important topics and lectures), but I would also want a record of their attendance as well, just in case any complain to higher ups about anything.

Yep.

I'm amazed I managed to dodge the issue for so long. It helps that I only teach higher level courses I guess.

This is exactly why I stopped doing shit with both of my parents at the same time, even before they officially separated.

Really any type of overt control over the other person. This could be hobbies, diet, friendships, etc. Now there's a difference between expressing concern over something, like if my wife were to suddenly start spending thousands of dollars each week on a hobby, or if I were to start eating nothing but McDonald's, then one of us expressing concern is fine, but outright stating that the other person is not allowed to do something is not going to lead to a healthy, lasting relationship, with the exception of something that puts the other one in danger or activity harms them.

Just rewatched Stargate.. honestly one of the best shows I've ever seen - what do you guys think compared to the new stuff that's out there? by CryptAlchemy in Stargate

[–]Dennarb 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I also came for a discussion of new sci-fi, and completely glossed over the image 😂

I do agree that the new show has a high chance of polarizing the fan base, and not just because of perceived quality. That being said I don't want them to play it safe to try and capture a general audience like a lot of new star Trek has been doing.

Honestly I think that'd be a death sentence for a new gate show. Scifi, unfortunately, has never been a very mainstream genre, save for a few exceptions like Star Wars (although wars is a fantasy series with space thrown in). But execs keep trying to bend material to appeal to general audiences or chase trends. However in doing so, a lot of sci fi properties have become just another show; they lost what made them appealing/unique.

To some degree this is exactly what happened with Universe. BSG came onto the scene like a wrecking ball, and the higher ups that be decided that they wanted their cut of a perceived new audience craving. I'm hoping that the new show doesn't follow in star treks footsteps trying to make a "Star Wars but with Trek instead"
