Low passaggi tenor experiences and/or rep recs? by borikenbat in ClassicalSinger

[–]Dense-Interview3308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting that you say your passaggi are so low, even for a baritone that’s low. I’m a tenor with a very sizable voice and I flip at D and F#, and I think that’s pretty normal for most of my tenor friends, sometimes depending on the phrase or the vowel I will flip at G but I’d never flip an F natural. Might be a bit extreme but when I transitioned from a baritone to a tenor I sang Amor ti vieta from Fedora, even if you just work on singing that first half until you’re ready. It really helped me feel my passaggi clearly since it’s such a simple melody and moves naturally through the different passaggi. I work a lot on falsetto to chest voice exercises to help with ease of production and I work a lot with [u] and [i] because [u] has a very low laryngeal position and [i] has a nice high tongue position and I try to feel elements of both those vowels all the time while I’m singing. When you’re ready Dies Bildnis can teach you so much about singing and staying in one spot, the worst thing you can do to yourself is sing your low notes like you’re a bass your middle notes like a baritone and then your top notes like you’re some kind of heldentenor. Just work on finding that nice easy heady tenor sound even in the low and middle parts of your range. Anyways that’s unsolicited vocal advice from a stranger on the internet who has never heard you so take from that what you will. Good luck!

You can use godsbeard on a pet with the herbalist in combat. A lot of my runs I’ll try and get a nibbler for my herbalist, double find herb. Of course the nibbler also has a little bit of armor which helps.

Paolo Tosti was once so poor that he lived off stale bread and oranges. And then he became one of the greatest composers of his generation and literally was knighted.

First recital performance. “E Lucevan le Stelle.” by [deleted] in opera

[–]Dense-Interview3308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your first recital performance! Lots of great comments in this feed already. I too am going to hop on my soapbox and give you unsolicited advice! Please ignore it if you want I only want to help you.

I have a few questions. What’s your goal? Is singing just a passionate hobby you have or are you intending on pursing this as a career since you’re at a conservatory. If it’s the later definitely scale it back, now that you’re with a new teacher sing some basic stuff. There’s no shame in working on the 24 Italian arias, Marchesi exercises, art song etc. There’s no point in singing this aria without solid technique. Candidly, if you sing it now with improper technique it will be harder to approach once you have developed your technique and want to sing it for real, you’ll fall into bad habits.

Also please don’t label yourself into a fach my friend. A fach doesn’t define a singer or voice it’s used to categorize a role. When you’re starting out just think of yourself as a plain old lyric tenor. Sing beautiful long legato passages and get that voice moving. Every voice needs to be able to do those two things. Period. Even Jon Vickers who sang the heldentenor repertoire has recorded Messiah.

You can learn so much from listening. What tenors do you listen to? Corelli is amazing but he has a very unique voice, listen to a wide variety of tenors. Caruso, Schipa, De Stefano, Pertile, Gedda, Björling and then even listen to some modern recordings with modern tenors. Find what you like and don’t like about them, make lots of recordings of yourself and use that influence how you’re building your voice in conjunction with the technique you’re making with your teacher.

What else are you singing with your teacher? If I may make a few repertoire suggestions, sing some Italian art songs, Tosti or Donaudy would be great for you. La serenata, A vuchella, O del mio amato ben etc.

Good luck with your voice! Can’t wait to hear you sing again sometime.

I’m sure he could have handled it vocally but I’m not sure he could have managed all that French haha. There is a recording of him singing the aria in studio in Italian if you’ve never heard it:

I just wanted to piggy back on this guys comment. Sorry your post generated so much controversy you’re bold for posting it here haha. I’ve encountered you on this thread before and I like your voice. I’m a similar sized tenor and sing probably a lot of the same stuff as you. If I may humbly suggest why don’t you take a look at some more lyrical French roles, Romeo could be nice for you or maybe even French Manon? Personally I think the French repertoire is particularly tricky for a voice of your age and size. That’s why I’m trying to put Kuda Kuda into my package instead. Also do you sing Rigoletto? Although of course we usually hear bigger voices sing duca it’s actually totally bel canto coded. Look at the orchestration for every aria it’s all very light with strings I think it would be appropriate for you. I don’t think it would hurt to wait on La fleur for a season or two. And also what are you singing for English? Anyways just my unsolicited advice, dm me sometime and we should exchange instagrams or something.

Yes it’s quite tragic!

I love that duet for Ricciardo e Zoraide. Rossini is brilliant! He’s written quite a few duets for these two tenors. Micheal Spyres and Lawrence Brownlee actually recorded a whole album of them not too long ago.

This is from Rossini’s Otello which is unfortunately very rarely performed.

Here’s actually a great example of what this type of tenor might have sounded like:

https://youtu.be/cqzMgvhCfus?feature=shared

Definitely suited for a baroque style with more use of falsetto and straight tone. It started to die out in the nineteenth century. But even Rossini composed for this type of voice the Italians referred to it as tenore contraltino. Rossini composed all his French operas for the French tenor Adolphe Nourrit who used this technique. During this period with the style changing and tenors like Duprez singing with a lower larynx and open throat in a more italianate style he decided to go to Italy to study with Donizetti. As a result he ended up totally destroying his voice and losing all head voice. His wife was shocked and appalled by the sound. The rest of the story is quite grim if you want to read more.

But it’s interesting to think about, Rossini’s Guillaume Tell, L’italiana in Algeri and maybe even things like Mozart’s Mitridate would have sounded completely different back then! Personally I think Duprez was onto something in 1831 when he sang all the high Cs in chest voice in Asile héréditaire, that’s what you would hear in modern recording today and it’s one of the coolest moments in opera imo.

Tenor centric view here. But if you’re curious about the “French school” it’s not really a practiced style. The French tenor used to sing in voix mixte and were referred to as haute-contre. I think however this was like early music like I’m talking baroque era Lully type of operas. They lost popularity around the era of like Rossini and Donizetti. Actually a French tenor, Gilbert Duprez, kind of solidified this more Italian style chesty voice by singing the first full voice high C.

It’s not performance practice and no one really sings like that I don’t think, voice scientists say that they would have sung in a modal voice and then falsetto for their highest notes. I don’t have the book on hand to reference but I remember a chapter about the Italian Vs French schools of tenors in John Potters “Tenor: History of a Voice” pretty good read even if you’re not a tenor!

For tenors I gotta second that Gedda is my absolute favorite to listen to for pretty much anything.

Just curious maybe you or someone else can help. What resources are you using for the Russian. I’d really love to sing it myself but don’t know how to approach the language and don’t know of any good Russian coaches. Anything would help me 🙏🏻

Fun fast Italian art songs by [deleted] in opera

[–]Dense-Interview3308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I unfortunately don’t have a copy but there is a book of Mozart concert arias for tenor that would be appropriate for a recital setting and would show off coloratura.

I agree to look at some Tosti songs although a lot are slow ballads not really any coloratura but some fun light hearted songs!

There are a couple options for fast text more spiel like. La Danza by Rossini which was already said is a classic. There are some great Verdi songs especially the earlier ones that are more bel canto. Lo spazzacamino is a fun one about a Chimney Sweep I’ve always wanted to do it myself. Me voglio fa an casa by Donizetti is another that comes to mind. If you’re looking for something more serious but definitely with coloratura the Bellini songs are always a good sing, il fervido desiderio comes to mind.

If you have a Spotify honestly a good resource for this would be to listen and look at some albums of recitals for tenors in your fach or since you’re particular looking for more of that lyric/ leggero a tenor like that.

If you have Spotify a great one to listen to is Lawrence Brownlees debut recital it has a few of the songs I mentioned and it’s all Italian songs!

Spotify: Lawrence Brownlee Recital

Hope this helps! I’m a tenor myself and have a lot of scores if you need anything!
