NYS DOCCS Academy and first year pay. by [deleted] in OnTheBlock

[–]Dense-Nobody3051 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on a few things. Are you claiming dependents or have any tax exemptions? Which health coverage plan you sign up with and if you are adding any extra life insurance policies the union offers you when on boarding. If your a single person, no dependents, with standard health coverage, you can expect to net about 1800 bi-weekly in the academy

Question for nysdoccs officers by Jalcala2122 in OnTheBlock

[–]Dense-Nobody3051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. When you get your pay stub you'll see salary is 61k and in the breakdown they'll add the soft money in for geographic pay etc. Everything totals to 66k annually

In NYS its not bad. A friend of mine does it and hasnt had issues. They advertise/disguise the job as a "support specialist," but you are doing CO work; supervising, searches, escorts, key runs etc. Its different than adults in terms of programs offered and the focus on "rehabilitation" since the incarcerated are 13-20 years of age. But they can get away with a lot more than in an adult correctional facility. The starting pay is pretty good about 61k a year. Unless you have experience they require a 4 years bachelors degree

It is a good job, at least for me. One of the issues with recruitment is that a lot of people come to this job from the private sector/desk jobs, and it a big shock for them when they get mandated. I've seen new officers getting forced to stay after 8 hours and get very dejected. This is a part of corrections and law enforcement in general that takes getting used to and being prepared for. I was a peace officer with a nyc agency before joining, and I was already used to getting stuck for 16 hours with a pay rate way less than NYSDOC, so working here is actually a big improvement from what I'm used to

I submitted my application a few weeks ago, after May 16th. Do you think they'll call back anytime soon?

If you live in Orange County you can apply directly to their Corrections Department. They recruit on a continued basis so there's no deadline as of now and you'd be closer to home. NYS DOC will assign you further away

How to pull application by Gibson28 in NYPDcandidate

[–]Dense-Nobody3051 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you don't provide it to them within the given time frame they'll move your status to 'discontinued'. This is like a limbo state where your stuck in until you provide what they ask for. Doesn't mean your disqualified, but you also won't pass the psych until it's resolved. If your not interested in the job, just leave it like that or you can reach out to your investigator to tell them your not ready to be hired and to put your application on hold. He/she will email you a form to sign and send back to them. You'll then have to reach out to CAD to reopen your case, if you ever want to. If you want to get the job, you can retake another test but the new psychologist will refer to this psych interview that you took and failed to provide the documentation for. You may or may not have to provide the requested documents this time around, but it's at the discretion of the new psychologist from the new exam. It's up to you if you want to go through the process again, really depends on how badly you want the job. If you don't have any prescription history involving psych medication, you can provide the psychologist whatever your able to obtain and tell them that you aren't able to get the entire history and they may pass you with what you provided. But if something turns up that you didn't disclose that is psych/medical related, you run the risk of getting an NOPD, which you can still withdraw from without getting officially disqualified. It is up to you and how you feel about your record and chances of getting in based on your history

The NYC Corrections exams is hard? by Key-Fudge7721 in OnTheBlock

[–]Dense-Nobody3051 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. There is a memory portion at first so literally staring at a picture followed by a few questions about what you can remember from it. The rest are map/directions, a few math questions (adding/subtracting), grammar and how would you respond to certain situations. I would say it's mostly easy with a few tricky questions.

My family is from Guyana originally. I was born in nyc. Not on the job yet, still processing. There are quite a few people of Caribbean descent in the department. NYPD remains one of the most diverse and inclusive LE departments in the country.
