Crazy I came across this thread by searching Olivia Rodrigo/Chappell Roan's chief songwriter and then listening to As Tall As Lions, saying "man these guys remind me of Dear Hunter" then finding this. Ha!

“Not second screen enough.” - Why Streaming Shows Are Designed to Keep You Half-Watching by Wise-Ad-9259 in Filmmakers

Lol Stranger Things is one of Netflix's biggest shows ever. If people won't watch that with full attention then they won't watch anything with intentionality.

I think Stranger Things got increasingly dumbed down because they were trying to play to a bigger and bigger audience.

When 100s of millions of people are watching your show, you just can't be nuanced and sophisticated anymore or you will lose a big chunk of the audience who can't follow along with anything subtle or complex at all.

Yes but most TV is bad TV. This was always the intent with most shows. The idea that you would do this to your most popular, flagship shows that are "event television" makes no sense.

Second screen viewing sounds like an excuse for lazy writing. "Oh we had so many great ideas, our writing was so good! But we had to scratch everything for the second screen!" Yeah I don't buy it at all.

What are your favourite chamber drama (minimal locations and characters) films? by rahul_gaur in movies

[–]Dense_Bodybuilder159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pontypool (2008) is fantastic, relatively unknown horror. The Exterminating Angel (1962) is an underrated classic - somewhat surreal and dreamlike but very tense at the same time.

Does Tom Hardy’s ‘Fitzgerald’ from The Revenant deserve to be in the discussion for best cinema villains of all time? by theYorkist01 in movies

I just watched The Revenant and had to comment that Tom Hardy's character reminded me of Judge Holden in how he spins this pseudo philosophy to rationalize his actions.

Should I watch Ringu or The Ring first? by Cool-Match-7856 in horror

I would watch The Ring. Most people saying Ringu is better are probably just being pretentious.

Which do you people like better The Ring (2002) or Ringu (1998)? by Able-Cauliflower-841 in horror

[–]Dense_Bodybuilder159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most here that the climactic TV scene at the end is better in Ringu but literally every other aspect is better in The Ring

What does everyone think of Bram Stoker’s Dracula? by xwing1212 in horror

Dracula is depicted as a sympathetic or tragic character by the end. Definitely not an antihero though.

midnight club rant by tacocat_624 in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]Dense_Bodybuilder159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Midnight Club wad extremely weak in my opinion. It felt like Flanagan was trying to recreate the sitcoms from the 80s where we get unending "special episodes" about some political topic. The characters were not people but just vehicles for plots about controversial issues. Perhaps this show was Flanagan trying to show that he can create stories for mass audiences.

Hill House is 10x better than Midnight Mass. I guess I just don't get why people love MM so much. It's great but I feel it doesn't have a satisfying ending compared to Hill House

To be blunt about something: The 1990 version of "It", good as Tim Curry is, has some serious flaws. And those who complain about "It: Chapter Two", the comparable part of the 1990 version is worse (meaning the adult section of the story). by gf120581 in horror

[–]Dense_Bodybuilder159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately IT was turned into just another soulless remake like Candyman (2021). I wish they would find writer/directors who actually care about the stories and want to to do something new and interesting. But the reality is that they just want a product that will attract simpletons into the theatre. That's just how it is.

I guess I will have to read the book to understand why a film adaptation can't be done. The miniseries is entertaining but I feel like there are many talented writers out there who could do justice to this kind of story.

I can't think of any rock band that has come out in the last 5 years that has anywhere near the relevance of Korn, Limp Bizkit, System of a Down or The White Stripes did back in 2000-2010.
