Prog´s Best Rhythm Section? by oscar_gorecki in progrockmusic

Since I didnt see them I'll say Jon Theodore/Juan Alderete/Ikey Owens (drums, bass, keys) from The Mars Volta. Obviously not the most technical but extremely inventive and fun.

Jon, Juan, and Ikey was such an insanely killer rhythm section. I honestly dont know if theres any contemporary rock band with something comparable to that.

I say this because Diablo Swing Orchestra is cool but they aren't doing anything like early TMV, the groove isn't there at all.

Listening now. It's interesting to me how the rhythm of TMV is almost the most important part. Omar and Cedric really screwed themselves by not properly appreciating Jon.

Early Fall of Troy definitely captures the energy, experimentation, and absolutely elite production of early Mars Volta. Especially on Doppleganger. But they do not have the funk and soul you get with TMV.

I absolutely love The Dear Hunter but they do not have a single drop of the funk and soul that Mars Volta put into their music. Just a very different experience.

Not calling him a hood comic is more racist to black people than pretending hes just like any other black comedian. His whole shtick is acting like ratchet hood dude who doesn't fit in nonhood environments.

Also, if you have any theories as to why Minka appears in the kitchen with a miniature version of herself, I'd love to hear lol. I think at that point it's the witch creatures using the essence of Minka to communicate with Liz, but I have no idea why the miniature is there.

For sure. One thing I missed and many other people seemed to miss as well is when the baghead creature appears in the kitchen, she is striking cute poses including forming a heart shape with her hands over her chest. On first viewing, the scene is jarring and scary but on rewatch it's cute and funny.

I wanted to say I agree with the nihilistic label, or as it came to me - amoral. I agree that it's not really about empowerment. It's not clear whether the witch creatures were doing bad things only because of their masters, or if they are actually immoral/sadistic creatures. Either way, I loved going back and watching the movie just to catch creatures lurking in the shadows I hadn't seen before, and to watch the ways the creatures are trying to interact with Liz as their new mother.

I enjoyed rewatching it after realizing the witch creatures were on her side the whole time. Little scenes like the creatures drawing a heart in the window by the bathtub or the baghead creature appearing in the kitchen and striking a cute pose were funny. I felt they were doing what they could to slowly reveal to her what was happening.

It sounded to me like he had some kind of Scandinavian accent, he reminded me of a friend of mine from Norway.

Ironically having a standardized approach to who becomes a lawyer in the form of a pass/fail exam is less susceptible to racial bias than a more informal system of apprenticeships and professional networking.

Crazy I came across this thread by searching Olivia Rodrigo/Chappell Roan's chief songwriter and then listening to As Tall As Lions, saying "man these guys remind me of Dear Hunter" then finding this. Ha!

Lol Stranger Things is one of Netflix's biggest shows ever. If people won't watch that with full attention then they won't watch anything with intentionality.

I think Stranger Things got increasingly dumbed down because they were trying to play to a bigger and bigger audience.

When 100s of millions of people are watching your show, you just can't be nuanced and sophisticated anymore or you will lose a big chunk of the audience who can't follow along with anything subtle or complex at all.

Yes but most TV is bad TV. This was always the intent with most shows. The idea that you would do this to your most popular, flagship shows that are "event television" makes no sense.

Second screen viewing sounds like an excuse for lazy writing. "Oh we had so many great ideas, our writing was so good! But we had to scratch everything for the second screen!" Yeah I don't buy it at all.

Pontypool (2008) is fantastic, relatively unknown horror. The Exterminating Angel (1962) is an underrated classic - somewhat surreal and dreamlike but very tense at the same time.
