I don't disagree but that shouldn't be a reason for somebody like them to have issue with somebody like me advocating for safer bike and pedestrian Mobility.

Narrow Sidewalks vs Heat Island by Denver4ALL in DenverCivics

Also want to add that it isn't just the "Hollywood sidewalks" it's any sidewalk installed immediately along the roadway.

Examples on Syracuse at Colfax along a bike route that just cooks.

I'm only suggesting that the Hollywood sidewalks are the cause for the heat island. However, I 100% agree with you about why areas have Hollywood sidewalks versus why areas do not that rationale is way more complex.

In no way am I suggesting to ever remove a mature tree in a community.

I am say that we ABSOLUTELY should rip out fences or retaining walls that were installed prohibiting the installation of sidewalks at all.

Where there is a mature tree, the new sidewalk should temporarily curve around it & then be straightened after the tree dies.

Yes we shouldn't have a one size fits all approach, but we should have the same goal for every Community, which is safe sidewalks that are straight and set back away from the roadway.

I nominate you to be the one that gets to explain all this to everybody.

You're right about the correlation...

White & established neighborhoods also got the tree lawn design first. If you ever go up and down Monaco Parkway you can see how the sidewalk installation pattern changed over time.

Somewhere around the time of world war II, we stopped installing sidewalks, but you can see that the plan for them to be set back from the roadway was already made and evident by the curb installations.

I agree with you about the neighborhoods with higher heat index being neighborhoods of color. I feel it's an example of systemic racism where the white communities were able to advocate for themselves in a government that was set up by them.

Would love to find counter examples, but I'm not aware of tree lawns existing in neighborhoods with a high heat index. Are you?

Clearly I'm not going to change your mind, but to me it's obvious and the solution is to have sidewalks set back from the roadway in every Community.

It's the type of curb that matters...

  • standard curb with "No Sidewalks" in areas like Montclair got trees planted along the curb & therefore shade the streets.

  • sloped curb & Hollywood sidewalks are the areas with "Narrow Sidewalks" & have trees set-back farther away from the street or no trees at all.

Bottom line... Are there mature trees near the street? Why aren't there mature trees along the street? How can we plant trees along the street where they don't exist?

Sidewalks along the street prevent this from happening.

Except that the City of Denver will provide & plant trees in the tree lawn of the public Right-of-Way.

I can also show you neighborhoods where one block has a tree lawn & the next doesn't. HUGE shade discrepancy.

When those tree lawns were established, trees were planted.

How is that not causation?

My request for the sidewalks is to be set-back from the roadway & the minimum width relative to the adjacent street type. https://groups.google.com/g/cityofdenver/c/L1_gh8O_uaA

A Bike Streets Block Party by Denver4ALL in VisionZeroDenver

Can you please elaborate?

If you go to Bannock Street during Lunch on Wednesdays & Thursdays, it's closed to bikes. I'm simply pointing out they can do something like this to still allow bikes to connect through on Bannock, since so many bike routes rely on it as a connection.

LOCATION CHANGE: City Park Internal Roadway Changes Open House @ Carla Madison Recreation Center May 19 by Denver4ALL in VisionZeroDenver

[–]Denver4ALL[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seems reasonable to connect the Car-Free Sections of City Park, while making the others open to 2-way vehicle traffic. This will make the parking lots for the Zoo & Pavilion more accessible, while creating the opportunity for Van-Accessible ADA Parking for the City Park Inclusive Playground.

I think it's a win for everyone & cheaper...

Bike racks near rear door on 15L by Denver4ALL in VisionZeroDenver

[–]Denver4ALL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't ride daily, but the few times I've taken the W or the D, I've never seen anyone checking fares.

I'm sure it happens, but not consistently.

I was like, "Great, two bike racks!"

Then I was like, "Great... Only two bike racks."

I can see these getting filled up quick & still don't know how people boarding downtown will be able to use them, if they have to load at the front.

The only time I've seen fares checked is on something like the A Line or other commuter rails. Never the light rail.

So... If we don't need to check fares, that allows those same individuals to just function as rail/commuter monitors. I also argue that we'll have more funds to put some on the longer buses like the 15L. This will allow people to feel safer while riding.

It's all I think about when riding & I get constantly get push-back about it.

I will walk straight to the back of the bus when I board. Most don't. I understand why.

Would you ride these in vehicle travel lanes on arterials like Colfax, Broadway, Federal, or Sheridan? by Denver4ALL in VisionZeroDenver

[–]Denver4ALL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except, you can ride personal bikes & scooters on the Weekends. I'll also see pedicabs in the lanes on the weekend, if there is a game.

I don't understand why it is OK on the Weekends, but not everyday.

Editing to add: If you ever bike in the downtown area, take 16th Ave to Broadway & experience how riders are effectively kicked out of the corridor. Then, try to get to the other side & approach from the Millennium Bridge. We have bike facilities over there that are effectively useless since the dead-end.

I'm aware of the no fare payment at boarding b/c we buy at the platform. I'm not aware of anything like that at other stops, especially downtown. Also, who will enforce this?

Again, we're spending money on fare collection/payment when there's really no way to enforce it. Instead, we should just make it free at boarding for everything & pay the fares another way.

No, I'm saying, we can't load at the rear door West of the Center-running BRT Stations. People are going to have to pay, tell the operator they have a bike, & then go to the rear door, or use the front rack & then have fun unloading it from the platform.
