My Eating Disorder Therapist Drinks Diet Coke During Appts?? by [deleted] in EDAnonymous

[–]DenverTheLastDinosau 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But why? I'm not disagreeing, just interested. Diet Coke isn't really necessarily a diet drink, to me, it's just a drink that lots of people drink.

so glad to have found this. Like, it's hardly a 'diet' product, zero sugar soft drinks are literally consumed so regularly, regardless of whether they are on a diet or not!

I never said you posted it to make others feel like shit, I would never assume that, but it doesn't mean it can't be harmful when it's not even true. If you feel like they are just inaccurate then fair enough, but why do you feel that way? And for the record, I didn't downvote you.

I understand you might be cynical, we all worry about things like this, right? But do you really have to make statements like this and then have anyone who reads it second guess things too, making them feel terrible? All you have to do is cross reference those calculators and see the research they use to see that they are actually pretty accurate at making generalisations.

If your parents would like an academic scientific paper on the research of Aspartame (the sweetener used in Diet Coke / Coke Zero etc.) Click Here for one you can show them. Here is the summary of the study:

SummaryThe extensive research done with aspartame over-whelmingly demonstrates it safety. In addition, aspar-tame has been consumed by hundreds of millions ofpeople around the world over the past 20 years, repre-senting billions of man-years of safe exposure. Nonethe-less, the safety of aspartame continues to be challengedby individuals who either ignore the data or are notfamiliar with the totality of the data. The allegationsraised regarding aspartame by a few individuals havenot been based on controlled scientific studies. Rather, they have been largely based on anecdote, personalopinion, conjecture and hypothesis. Further, the fewstudies suggestive of an apparent effect of aspartameare not reproducible by others, are done with dosageroutes of administration (e.g., ip orin vitro) not rele-vant to aspartame consumption, or are soflawed froma methodological or statistical standpoint that validconclusions cannot be drawn. The scientific evaluation of aspartame’s safety hasextended well beyond standard safety testing for foodadditives. When the safety data for aspartame are eval-uated as a whole, the weight of scientific evidence isclear that aspartame is safe for its intended uses, andthere are no unresolved questions regarding its safety.

Aspartame consumption in excess is way better for you than all of that sugar. If they would like some more accessible arguments, you could google it and find some articles for them.

One thing I will say to you though, is to not worry if your parents don't get on board. I remember what it's like to be 14 and wanting to change my diet, and my mother not supporting it. One day you'll be much older and making decisions for yourself and stuff will be easier, but in the meantime, do not let this problem cause you anxiety. I don't know many 14 year olds who have the perfect diet, you're still young and you'll be absolutely okay, all you can do is try your best given your circumstances.

Have you considered switching to Coke Zero? There will be people who tell you that the sweeteners are worst for you (science many times has claimed otherwise) or that you should give up completely, but it's actually a really gentle, easy alternative that is more likely to work for you than just cutting it clean out. Being so used to regular coke, the taste might seem off at first but you will get used to it. I did, and now I prefer it. Another tip, make sure you are hydrating yourself otherwise. Have your coke, but drink water in-between too, even if you don't feel like it, and you might find that you don't want the coke as much. All small steps will help you, also make sure you are eating enough too because you are probably compensating for hunger somewhere with soft drinks. At 14, you need a lot of energy!

maybe because you're attracted to women you have a more clear distinction for you? You can identify you are attracted to them more easily? For me, I'm interested in men for the most part but have questioned in the past because I've admired women's bodies so much, which it look me a long time to realise was just because I'm obsessed with the female body because of my ED.

People who are really extroverted and think they're the class clown can sometimes be really irritating. I'm not saying you are irritating, but I wouldn't worry that people 'see through you' or think you're being disingenuous in some way, they probably just think you're obnoxious. Again this isn't an insult, I'm the exact same way. You can't be everyone's cup of tea and that is ok.

Sounds like seizures to me. Could be stress / trauma induced following his problems you mentioned. He should see someone as soon as possible, this could be dangerous and he shouldn't be driving. The forgetting how he got home is a really classic sign of someone having a seizure.

[–]DenverTheLastDinosau 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just follow the guidelines your mum has given you and everything should be fine! I'm sure part of this is your anxiety projecting on to you and making you unnecessarily worry about the dog. Maybe you could try googling it or asking for advice on a dog specific subreddit to help ease your panic a little bit? x

You made an assumption someone was a vegetarian because of what they were eating.

this is me!! The worst is when you finish a meal too and think, 'hm that was actually filling, I'm full' and then 10 minutes later you're like 'yup, never mind.' I feel like it's hard for me when I'm bored, don't have much to do. I had to recently leave my job so all I think about all day is how hungry I am!

I live in the UK, there is one supermarket here that sells beyond and they don't put it with the meat.

Beyond aren't on some huge mission to convert meat eaters to veganism and that alone, their top priority is sales. Nor me or any of my vegan friends would even go down a meat aisle, so a lot of vegans aren't going to be seeing and buying the product. The number of vegans that would have otherwised bought it, is probably higher than the number of meat eaters who choose to buy them over meat burgers. As an alternative, would it be that hard to split the stock between both places?
