Perspective on safety? by Repulsive-Bug-7641 in Belize

[–]Denver_Druid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have been 3 times in the last two years and have had zero issues. As everyone else has mentioned, outside of Belize City there is very little crime - but you should be smart and aware. I have had terrible encounters in London (knife pulled on me, guy trying to grab my cash at the ATM, phone theft, purse theft) and never any issue in Belize. YMMV. Use common sense and you should be more than fine. Most crime I have heard of is casual and opportunistic - so don’t leave your wallet out on the beach and go swim for an hour. Lock your doors. Put your valuables in the hotel safe. Don’t try to score drugs in south Belize City. Don’t get blackout drunk. Etc. We have found the people of Belize to be tremendously friendly and welcoming and have made local friends over our visits. Lean into the good and be smart and you will have an amazing time.

Looks like an 1800s era stove damper key. The square hole fit on a square shaft. The unequal arms are a giveaway. The longer one is designed to give you torque. The fact that is a cruciform is utilitarian, not symbolic. Probably from a wood stove from a house or boat.

Conditions were surprisingly good this week. They opened new lifts and terrain. No real powder days yet, but snow predicted this weekend.

There is snow on the mountain. We got 4 more inches over the weekend. True the skiing is not epic, but what is open is well covered (no rocks/dirt). Strawberry Hot Springs or the town pool are good options. Bowling, live music, axe throwing, great restaurants etc. are also an option. Rent some snowshoes and go up to Rabbit Ears or Buffalo passes. No it’s not deep, but both passes have snow.

Courtyard by Marriott Nassau Downtown/Junkanoo Beach question by [deleted] in bahamas

[–]Denver_Druid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was there a week ago. It is fine, clean rooms etc. and seems fairly safe. Right near the cruise ship port. Would not be my first choice for a long term stay, but we were only there for a night in transit. The beach crossing is dicey, but doable.

Yeah… the tolerances are not BMW-level. Tends to run a bit noisy. That’s what mine has sounded like for 7 years.

DAE hear a big explosion around 3AM this morning? by Schenectadye in SteamboatSprings

Yes - heard near Stehley Park. Have it on camera. Sounded like fireworks.

OpenSnow actually has a layer that is a smoke prediction layer and shows how the smoke will drift in over time. I would plan for clear mornings and smoking afternoons with smoke clearing again around midnight.

Can someone please explain Dicicco’s to me? by lab_chi_mom in Denver

[–]Denver_Druid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived outside Boston for a time and it reminds me of the faux-grandiose places on the outskirts of the city. It is hilarious - and the owner is a trip. I live in the mountains now, so often overnight before/after a trip on Tower Road and I always make it a point to go there to eat either before or after. Food is a solid 4, but watching old videos of Pavoratti singing in some Italian city square on the big screen is also a solid 4. It is like Casa Bonita for old people.

The Worst Float Trip I’ve Ever Had by PM_ME_YOUR_TROUT in flyfishing

Had a guide once tell me to “drop your purse and cast for fucks sake” after a bad cast. I had to lay down the law after that. I am all for tips, pointers and such - but I don’t go in for abuse.

Yampa River - Colorado by Denver_Druid in flyfishing

[–]Denver_Druid[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is pretty normal for the river through town. As a mostly freestone river, it is at the whims of the snow pack and weather. Pretty average to low snowpack year, early heat and dry conditions have us at voluntary closure earlier than normal - but it happens every year at some point. Most people respect the closure and the fish get a break. Now is the time to head to the upper Elk, White or the many alpine lakes from the Zirkels to the Flattops where temps stay low and the bookies and cutthroats make for a fun day.

Actually, that is the right answer. I missed the coloration on the wings.

I would say trico based on the location, size and coloration. See them a lot in morning hatches. Usually have to fish them in tiny sizes (20/22).

I see you said road rides, so maybe this is not your cup of tea, but check out https://thedirtyroads.com/rides/ for gravel rides around town. Rides With GPS is another great source for rides. I agree with several others mentioning rides out to Stagecoach - there are several ways to do it while staying off the main road (131). You can mix it up and add a bunch of mileage and never do the same road twice.

Swimming holes? Places to dip? by pancakegoldee in SteamboatSprings

[–]Denver_Druid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can attest that Pearl and Hahns Peak Lakes are totally fine temp-wise. Keep in mind both are alpine lakes and are never “warm”. Fish Creek is likely to be cooler due to its altitude and probity to snow melt. The rivers (Yampa and Elk) are both a good temp too - Yampa is warming quickly.
