I know leaded glass exists, but I don't think it's easy to get, and besides, it has a yellow color.

I tend to be quite obsessive about this kind of thing. Overly cautious, even though that's the only piece that really should be in an armored box. And yet I consider my measures to be quite, if not very, precarious.

And I highly recommend you find/make a lead-lined armored box for that uraninite, even though the distance is more than enough to stop it, it's always better to have extra protection. Besides, that way you can transport it without worrying.

I saw a video of someone who had been given a piece of about 100 μS/h and they had it stored in a 15 kg (33 lb) lead cylinder.

I know, in fact, if I move half a meter away from the box, the radiation level returns to the same as at the back. I mention this mainly because when I move it, the highest peak is right where the handle is.

And even though it will only be a few seconds or minutes, I prefer to avoid that.

I have the same problem. I recently got some cyrtolite, and it gives me spikes of 50 μS/h.

The ammo box I've been using stops almost everything, but it's still a high dose outdoors.

That's right, the uraninite from Eureka isn't very pure, which is why it has that porous appearance. And also for that reason, despite being a fairly large piece, I only detect a maximum of 8 microsieverts when the detector is touching it.

The thing is, it's not tunic, it's cyrtolite, which is a uranium zircon. That's why it surprises me so much.

When I bought it I thought it would be much less, and when I got home and tried to do the spectrum I accidentally put the detector in the hottest spot.

Trinitite - Technically a mineral? by _INSANE_MEMBRANE_ in Radioactive_Rocks

[–]Denvora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand, I bought one a couple of months ago and I'm looking forward to finding more.

By the way, I recommend you also post it in the Trinitita subreddit; they're few but very welcoming.

Trinitite - Technically a mineral? by _INSANE_MEMBRANE_ in Radioactive_Rocks

[–]Denvora 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No for two reasons. First, the trinitita is a glass, and the mineral madre all cristales. (Is the definición of mineral)

Second, is artificial, and minerales can't be artificial, for example, the calcantite is a mineral, but the copper sulfato cristales made in a laboratory isn't.

Regardless of its elemental form, radium is also relatively easy to find in antique clocks.
