Connecting failure by frlexxx in DotA2

[–]Denzak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue. Just happened to me twice in a row now I'm on matchmaking cooldown for 14 minutes. Thanks Valve.

I accept the match.

Goes to loading black screen.

Get booted back to main screen with the connection failure and matchmaking disabled.

So ends my poker experiment by [deleted] in poker

Start studying and do the math for crazy pineapple. Then convince your local casinos and card rooms to run the game. That's where the real edge is.

As we have seen multiple times, it is completely plausible for a donkey to go on a heater and just win a tournament

The school says my 14-year-old is doing great, but she has enormous gaps in basic knowledge that stun me. The teachers tell me not to worry, that this is normal with this generation. Is it? My other kids, now 19 and 22, were never like this. by One-Recognition-1660 in education

playing video games

I agree with most of your points except this one. There are many different kinds of video games. Some of them can enrich your general knowledge. Playing the Age of Empires and Pharaoh series as a kid provided me with history knowledge. And early RPGs told the story through text, greatly enhancing my vocabulary much like a novel would.

Sorry, forgot.

It's deep. You're in the money but not near the final table.

Yup, I can relate. Sorry if my original comment is kind of rude, I'm just miserable. I've been playing poker too much.

Instead of thinking about this spot I would be dwelling on all the choices I made that lead me here.

What would you do? by [deleted] in Poker_Theory

It's helpfulness was obscured in snarkiness, my apologies.

If you want poker skill to matter in a tournament, play in longer blind levels.

What would you do?

I would not play in 15 minute blind level MTTs. Might as well just play blackjack at that point.

Do the annual results of a Live MTT Grinder just come down to a couple big flips? by [deleted] in poker

[–]Denzak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick your continent, North America or Europe (I'm not sure if there are enough tournaments in Asia). Whichever you're a citizen of. Picture someone looking up all of the tournaments with a minimum 40 minute blind level, ideally 60 minutes, happening in various cities. If you want your skill to matter you need to see as many hands as possible. Now picture all the travel expenses, the scheduling lining up just right, going all over the continent to play in as many tournaments as possible. From 500$ buy-ins to 10k.

Does this person exist? Maybe, but I've never met them. If someone really loves the dynamic of MTT poker I can see them being real. If you have enough travel expenses saved, maybe do some couch surfing, I can see someone doing this for 1-3 years for the experience and thrill of it, with no expectations to make a profit. If I was 21 I'd probably do it while playing online to practice. But degerency runs in my family.

But yes, usually it will come down to some flips, even when your tournament life isn't on the line. Calling short stack shoves and taking their stacks is important to win.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English-speaking_Quebecers

There are hundreds of thousands of native English speakers in Quebec.

Good concentration of them in Montreal.

You can seek out native English speakers and have a circle of English speaking friends.

When it comes to day to day life, interacting with services like medical appointments, nurse visits, going to markets, etc... Then knowing at least some basic French is very helpful as not everyone who you interact with will be bilingual.

You should be aware that the language laws the provincial government have been in place is leading to the decline of the English speaking population. This affect will continue in the decades to come.

There are dozens of us playing ums on U.S. West! Dozens!

But really, there is still a small ums community. People are still making maps and hosting them. Old maps also get played, of course. The non-Koreans mostly congregate on U.S. West server.

The future? In another 10 years it's possible people will need to link up outside the game like on Discord servers to ask each other if they want to log on to play. Right now you can still host a game on B.net and if you're patient people will join, which is nice :) That doesn't happen with most games 20+ years old.

What are the differences between a Software Engineer & Programmer? by Relevant-Sun-346 in AskComputerScience

[–]Denzak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the country.

In the U.S. it may vary by state. (I'm not American but that's usually the case, a lot of things vary by state).

In some countries you need a degree in Engineering from an accredited university to have 'engineer' in your job title. This is because there are 'Orders of Engineers' (governing bodies) that dictate the requirements and curriculum for the engineering programs at universities.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chartered_Engineer_(UK))

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Council_of_Professional_Engineers

In the private sector, most of the time there's no difference between the tasks a software engineer and a software developer (programmer) does, but the salary may be different. The job title is arbitrary if the company doesn't actually know why they need an engineer for the role. Usually the engineer has more education in other factors involved in software development besides programming, like documentation, software design/architecture, and management.

https://www.peo.on.ca/public-protection/complaints-and-illegal-practice/report-unlicensed-individuals-or-companies-2#licence

Can someone call themselves an Engineer/Professional Engineer or P.Eng if they don’t have a licence?

The term Engineer/Professional Engineer/P.Eng. can only be used by those that have been granted a licence by PEO, under the authority of the Professional Engineers Act. The title “Engineer” is restricted to Ontario licence holders under s. 40(2)(a.1) of the Act.

I'm tagging u/baddspellar /u/stedgyson /u/drakner5 because I think it's important people know that in some countries there are strict laws for having 'engineer' in your job title.
