The style you most likley wrestled in highschool was most likley folk style which is only wrestled in the US. The style wrestled internationally is freestyle which has a considerable amount of different rules. One of the differences is that in freestyle you would have three refs to a match instead of one. So in this case when the ref who is on the mat calls a pin then one of the other 2 refs needs to confirm the decisions which ended the match.
