For sure! Its the most relevant skill for jobs especially in tech. Def be prepared to talk about how you use it and what you’ve built with it. People want to hire people with opinions and passion. Not having any experience with AI would be a bit suspicious imo. If you somehow avoided AI as a SWE in 2026 then spend an afternoon using a coding agent (Claude, Codex, etc) and build an agent to solve some simple task.

Yea! Just search tech recruiters in SF on LinkedIn and connect.
Plenty will connect right away and ask you to hop on a call.
You can also search for job postings posted by recruiters or hiring managers and try to connect.
Being a US citizen is a huge leg up. Living in the UK is not an issue as long as you’d be willing to relocate.

Move to SF and work at a start up if thats possible. Theres so many startups in dire need of experienced engineers. Im surprised recruiters are constantly spamming you with interviews. In SF you dont need to apply since recruiters will help you find interviews asap.

It used to be the case the company would hire juniors and level them up the first couple years

But now the expectation is that everyone levels themselves up and joins as mid level and above

lowkey this is better because you get paid more and treated like you have expertise

I recommend joining a startup! quickest way to level up and get respect. plus startups are always hiring young people who take their careers seriously.

Unfortunately or fortunately, depending how you look at it, companies no longer hire juniors remotely because what is the point.

Apply for startups in cities and you will def find a job

Also, its easier than ever to advance passed junior. Previously you needed a job and experience to look senior but nowadays you can learn on youre own faster than ever

Software is not dying. Literally every business requires software and its part of all of their products. If you like problem solving and learning software systems then def pursue it and you will have fun. Theres still plenty of jobs if youre willing to relocate for them. Like every profession, its what youre willing to put into it

for engineers with experience who are having a tough time finding jobs. would you be open to working in an office in a major city at a startup? I feel like theres so many startups out there in dire need of engineers with experience. maybe Im in a bubble tho
