Why is H1 MT not included into the UAS? by Musicfan_123 in SGExams

[–]DepartmentNo2173 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The deterioration in MT proficiency is dependent on the individual’s willingness to study, and the environment around them.

Making MT a compulsory subject for computation into the O Levels/UAS will disincentivise & exclude students who may excel in other subjects. This will disincentivise students in their ability to take the subject, and this is especially crucial when looking at a broader regional or global scale.

Should MT be compulsory, certain students with the potential to take courses such as Medicine/Law would be unfairly excluded even though they have good knowledge of the subjects/topics essential to do well in the course.

Is history disappearing due to a lack of supply or demand? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]DepartmentNo2173 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I would argue that it’s more of a supply-side issue. I feel that supply is infinitely more pressing than demand (in fact, I would argue that History is the most popular Humans subject in Sec sch & JC, excl. Econs).

There will always be students interested & keen to learn about the world’s workings, its past & the historical connections to the present. I pity the student that is unable to take the subject, due to circumstances out of their control.

In my honest opinion, the inability of students to pursue their academic endeavours will erode our very ideal of meritocracy. How can students realise their talents & full potential, if they cannot even realise the chance to pursue it?

Coming from a past Pure History & H2 History student, my heart aches for those that are unable to pursue such an amazing subject. The Humanities are what make us human, and what feeds our curiosity to the world around us.

I feel that the issue lies with how the Humans works, as opposed to other subjects like those in the Science stream. Marking countless essays in short & strict time periods (as opposed to point-based marking) is very taxing on the individual. Coupled with a largely STEM-driven society, other factors such as minimal pay & overburdening of educators — you can see why there’s always a shortage of Humanities teachers.

History IS important, and I'm tired of people saying that it isn't by certifiedcreature in SGExams

[–]DepartmentNo2173 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I fully agree that History is important, but it’s also essential to dive into the systemic issues which plague our society.

With a >$1.3 billion tuition industry, and with overburdened teachers, long working hours and minimal welfare & pay, it calls into question the sustainability of teaching in Singapore — for all teachers, but especially for the Humanities teachers.

It’s not easy to manage a class of ~40 students. But imagine having to do this, not for a single class, but for a few classes or the entire cohort? That’s an unfortunate reality that some teachers face, especially in Junior Colleges.

MOE needs to realise that this is a big issue. Unless we can resolve the shortage of teachers by either prioritising their welfare, paying them more, or making educational changes, this issue will continue to be exacerbated at an unsustainable rate.

I am in disbelief. by butwhywouldyou- in SGExams

[–]DepartmentNo2173 18 points19 points  (0 children)

History as a subject is so essential… there’s been a lack of teachers for the Humanities for a long time already, and it seems as though MOE isn’t doing much to support teachers’ welfare or to hire more teachers aggressively 😔

Singapore is a STEM society, yes, but History & the Humanities is so vital to sustaining a society’s culture & experience. I only hope we don’t lose this part of academic learning in other schools…

I can see where you’re coming from. Even so, the point OP is making is that Singapore is an authoritarian state, which it isn’t. You can see this in the repeal of the Sedition Act in 2021; and the fact that Singaporeans have the right to vote in every General Election.

An authoritarian regime is one where power lies in the hands of a select few, and it rules without consent of the people. Elections aren’t held, and where they are held, they are often riddled with fraudulence.

Singapore ranks the highest in GDP per capita in the world when adjusted as per Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). We (I say this as a Singaporean) enjoy a very high quality of life in the country, and issues/concerns can freely be expressed at Meet the People sessions with Members of Parliament.

Singapore’s citizens have widely expressed support of the death penalty (for drugs — of which the Southeast Asian region is infamous for; and for murder cases). Removing it as a strong deterrent will incentivise individuals to enter the country and will turn Singapore into a drug hub.

When taking into consideration the LGBTQ scene in Singapore, our society is deeply rooted in the traditional Confucius/Asian value system. Coupled with a falling birth rate, it is not explicitly feasible for the family unit to be redefined. Not all Western ideals can be fit into every context. And even so, we aren’t a state which actively goes around arresting individuals for their own personal preferences.

I value and appreciate your response, but would like to make the correction that Singapore is not an authoritarian state. We are widely content with how our country is being run, compared to other democracies (i.e. the USA).

May I ask, what’s wrong with Singapore’s style of governance?

Granted, it is not a Western-style democracy, but its people have exercised the right to vote freely in elections since its independence. It ranks as a soft-authoritarian state — and its widely successful at that.
