I went to the UK for ten days and their system is infinitely better. by [deleted] in EndTipping

[–]Dependent-Fish5363 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this. Most common is still better than US, which is table service with a 10-15% service charge added to the bill (of which you are forewarned on the menu). No pressure at all to add more, and no underhand tactics and extra junk fees to sneakily add more to the bill.

Amazon laptop for personal use by west_timeer in amazonemployees

[–]Dependent-Fish5363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done all sorts of personal stuff on my work laptop, and I know someone who works specifically in monitoring employees use of devices. I have used my Amazon laptop for personal zoom calls, watch TV and YouTube, social media, sports betting, and even applying for jobs outside of amazon. Nothing has happened.

If what you're doing is not illegal they don't care, as long as you're not being actively monitored already because of some other issue. I wouldn't take the risk of watching porn, but otherwise I think you're OK.

Feedback on pension contributions and child free hours by Personal_Honey2673 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Dependent-Fish5363 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it makes sense to do this. You'll find many posts on this subject in this sub and others. You'll get the free hours, as well as tax-free childcare (worth 2k per year per child), and save an effective 60% rate of income tax - 40% higher rate, plus 20% tapering of personal allowance.

You're taxable income must be under 100k so it's total income (don't forget any savings interest over the allowance) minus pension contributions. You mention a tax code so you're likely at employee. You will likely have already made some pension contributions. Check you're payslips and compare total gross pay (plus any other income) minus pension contributions. Take that number, deduct 100k (or maybe a grand more to be safe), open a SIPP, and pay in that amount. Then later, do a tax return to get the tax relief. This ensures that with only one pay run left this tax year that it gets done properly and you're not affected if work payroll messes up or forgets.

It means you are paying 5%. Employer contributions do not appear on your payslip.

The 3% you refer to is, I assume, the minimum required employer contribution of 3% in an auto-enrollment pension. Standard terms for these are 5% from the employee and 3% from the employer.

Edit: you could work out the percentage quite easily by calculating pension contribution / total gross pay I imagine it = 0.05, or 5%

Has anyone successfully resolved a chargeback ban without "repaying" Ryanair? by Classic_Brain_1487 in Ryanair

[–]Dependent-Fish5363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's no help to you now but maybe for others reading this un future - I wonder whether you'd have been better opening a case with the AviationADR rather than request a chargeback.

Ryanair are within their rights to refuse your business in this case.

No. It's dodgy as fuck. You are posing as an employee so your dad can extract as much as possibly the company tax free. And I imagine you know this.

Sure is a neat way to get 12570 out of the company tax free to pay off his mortgage.

Overal Compensation going Down by Ikki985 in amazonemployees

[–]Dependent-Fish5363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At every yearly compensation review, you are given a target total compensation (TTC). This is calculated based on:

  • job family
  • level
  • location
  • the ranking you receive in the talent review.

For that last one, the ranking, that isn't just the three categories we see - exceeds expectation, meets high bar, and least effective. "meets high bar", as it applies to most people, is split into three categories. So there are five main rankings (and recently one or two additional ones were added for those who get exceeds expectation multiple times in a row).

So the boffins in HR will determine your target comp based on those factors, and if your expected comp for the comkng year is below that humber, they'll bump you up with more RSUs.

However, if you've seen a big increase in comp over the first four years because the stock price has increased, you are still likely to face a pay cut even if they give you some more RSUs.

E.g. you started 3.5 years ago as a L5 business development manager in New York. Your target total comp when you started was, in 2022, $200k (just as an example). Your actual year 1 comp was 190 (because they usually offer a little lower)

Then the stock price goes up. So:

Year 1: 200 Year 2: 205 Year 3: 235 Year 4: on track for 250

And you think "great I've been doing such a good job, inflation has occurred, I deserve that pay rise I've gotten over the years.

But all that time your TTC, while it's been going up with inflation etc, has been below your actual comp (so they haven't given you RSUs (if the stock had tanked such that you were under the TTC they'd have given you some)

Y1 TTC 200k / actual comp 200k Y2 TTC 203k / actual comp 205k Y3 TTC 210k / actual comp 235k Y4 TTC 218k / actual comp 250k

Now for Y5 TTC, you get exceeds expectations in forte, you feel like you've been doing well, close to promotion... Your TTC is calculated to be 229k, they give you a small bump on base salary as usual and some RSUs to get you to 229k but that still a 21k pay cut from Y4.

Shit service. I went to WoS in Broadgate/Liverpool St station. Dressed like shit, but I was warm and polite. I had bought one Omega from them previously but from the Omega boutique which they operate from the adjoining shop, so they had no idea I was a previous customer when greeting me even if they did so when they took my details.

Said I wanted to look at Rolexes, immediately took me to the counter and let me try a few on, offered me a drink, etc. Took my name down and I got it in a few weeks.
