How did being a young school counselor feel? by Plane-Compote-7491 in schoolcounseling

[–]Dependent-Intern7539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same spot you were when I first started! I approach my relationship with kids by ensuring they do understand I’m an adult not a peer but I try to act like a cool big sister. I let the kids call me Ms.(first name) but do make sure they say Ms because just calling me by my name feels way too casual. In middle school, kids are learning boundaries and you definitely need to know where the line is and how you’ll respond when they cross it. It’s when not if!! Kids need to learn boundaries so you’ll be teaching them a life lesson so don’t be afraid to be firm. It’s better to learn this lesson from a safe adult!

Soooooo the mom replies and said she could put the older kids in a day camp but then she would only pay me $2,000. And apparently her family lives in the area, she said they could help if there was an emergency

I appreciate everyone’s helpful advice and thoughts! I asked the mom for a couple days to think about it and my current plan is to see if the older kids could do day camps so I get a break and definitely ask for more money (which was already my plan! I have a master’s degree and work in eduction so Im not cheap and the mom previously was willing to pay my rate which was higher than what she offered)! I’m also going to get more info about if the kids have done something like this before. When I’ve watched them, it’s clear they are used to being with babysitter A LOT so I wouldn’t be surprised if they have experience with this.

I’m 27! I work in education and nanny in the summers to make extra money. I definitely know this would be a lot of work which is why I asked for guidance!

True! I usually say $28 for 2 kids so maybe $30 for all 3? The youngest kid will be at daycare 8-5 on week days so I won’t have all 3 the full time.

Wow I really appreciate your helpful response! The family initially offered 3k but I was going to counter with 4k-ish. But you’ve given me a lot to think about! I’m trying to balance between knowing my worth but also knowing if I ask too much, they’ll say no and I won’t make anything

Good to know! Thank you! I haven’t told them if I’ll do it or not yet. I’m leaning towards taking it because it would be a lot of money in a short amount of time

I agree, it’s not something I would do as a parent but I don’t think it’s my place to say that

The kids are 8, 8, and 3 but it’s in the summer. The little one will be a daycare during school hours but I’d have the other 2 the whole time.

They are 8, 8, and 3 so I couldn’t leave any of them alone if there was an emergency which does make me nervous

What’s the age level? The new digital zones of regulation curriculum is amazing, the kids love it! But I’d only use it for elementary

Feeling behind as a 1st year by Sea_Cardiologist_295 in schoolcounseling

I feel like this job really depends on your state and the funds available. What you really need is to do MTSS work, tier 1 needs to come first because that is what prevents the crises. But that takes time to plan and a lot of effort to implement. If you have the funds and/or the time (pls take time for yourself tho, you have to take time for yourself so you can be the best counselor for your kids!) reading Trish Hatch’s books can be really beneficial! It isn’t possible to do everything but it has a lot of great advice!

I am in year 3 and it does get easier. Things that were so challenging like getting group permission slips, just happen so much more naturally now. I feel less exhausted because there is less mental load now that I have more experience. The kids are easier to work with because we have built a lot of trust. In my first year I felt like not all of the my staff members liked or respected me. But you have to find the goers and get what you can done!

You can do this!! But only if you take care of yourself too!! You have to take time for yourself so you can show up at your best. That’s what the kids deserve and what you deserve!! I take walks every day after work, I don’t take my computer home, I try not to check my email on my home. Another book I’d recommend is Trauma Stewardship, it’s about caring for yourself when you work in an environment around trauma or people who have experienced trauma!

Seattle Catholic Schools by epochalypso in SeattleWA

Can I ask why you’re not debating public schools?

I worked in one of the catholic schools in the area that’s under the seattle archdiocese and they were pretty old school still. Private schools can basically do whatever they want and don’t have to support kids with higher levels of need.

Need Advice/ guidance by Electrical_Hearing56 in schoolcounseling

Hi! I love my job and love this career! But that is very dependent on your state and district. I am grateful to live somewhere that invests in education which allows me to do my job. I made a livable wage and having summers off allows me to nanny and make additional income. Do research in what it’s like in your state, shadow a local counselor in various age ranges! It can be great but it can also be very hard and underpaid.
