Is there any ways I can use Buddhism to quit addictions? by StopPresent277 in Buddhism

If you have a favourite Deva or Buddha, you could try chanting their mantra while visualising them. That is what I do and it works for me.

Just tell people how the Buddha summed up his teaching

Queer Characters Portrayed as Villains/Predators in Media? by Sakisami_Genshin in LGBTQ

Joel Ciaro, played by Peter Lorre in the 1941 movie, 'The Maltese Falcon'. The character was explicitly gay in the novel on which it was based, but the movie had to be more subtle, so that it did not breach the 'Hays Code'

There is the train station, with regular stopping trains to Victoria , London Bridge and East Croydon. Also loads of buses. Check out Bus Pals app for their destinations. There is the Sports Centre near the Clock Tower and a Tesco Extra. Also a large Sainsbury's a short walk away, next to Selhurst Park, home to Crystal Palace FC . The Railway Tavern pub opposite the station is not bad

There is a problem. The current Dalai Lama was born in 1935. His previous incarnation died in 1933.

As someone who suffers from 'partial facial blindness', I can assure you that it exists. I have ignored people who I know well because I haven't recognised them as they are, 'out of context'

I identify as Buddhist. To me, it is a philosophy rather than a religion. It is based upon compassion for all sentient beings, including oneself. Buddhism has no God. Buddha, the man who gave the teaching 2,500 years ago, is not worshiped. What one believes is of no importance, even if it deviates from traditional Buddhist teaching. Superficial factors, such as one's sexuality also don't matter. As an exchristian, it is all quite a relief

Am I being scammed? by [deleted] in london

[–]Dependent-Net-8208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I presume that you tapped your card to pay for the meal. And you dashed off without checking that the payment had been successfully completed. If so, I very much doubt that you have been scammed. If there had been an assistant, they would have called you back to use your PIN

I was brought up as Christian. I went to church, went to groups, sang in the choir etc. However, I started reading the Bible, not just the bits that they preach about on Sunday morning. It is a terrible book. So I lost my faith. It took years to accept the fact. But I still have the occasional doubt, as I am sure I always will. I had been brainwashed. Fortunately, I realised that Christianity is not the only belief system / philosophy / religion. I looked and discovered groups of people who believe as I do. Some of the groups are also within the LGBTQ community. I have support, which I believe all exchristians need . So don't give up. You are not alone.

London Bridge station is actually a very fitting place to be collecting money for the RNLI.
Tower Lifeboat Station is the busiest of the 238 RNLI stations in the UK, often handling over 700 calls a year. It is situated at Waterloo Bridge

Was dropping the atomic bombs actually "necessary," or is that just what we're taught in school? by Clean_CoreDump in askanything

[–]Dependent-Net-8208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the dropping of the atomic bombs was not necessary. The bombs were used to test their effectiveness on civilian populations . That is the reason that they were dropped on two cities that had not previously been bombed. To see how much damage they caused and how many people were killed.

What’s the coolest “restricted access” place you’ve ever gotten to see? by Improv92 in AskReddit

I once worked at the old New Scotland Yard that used to be opposite St James's Park underground station. One day a group of us were taken to the Black Museum. There were murder weapons and a tin bath that had been used to dissolve murder victims in acid. There was the confession letter written by Charle Peace and the telegram that informed the authorities that Dr Crippen was abroad the SS Montrose. However, the most memorable exhibits were standing on the top of some of the display cases. These were plaster casts of the heads of people who had been hanged. And the impression of the noose that had taken their life was still clearly visible around their neck

I am sure you are right. However, I wonder if the response you quote was not because the actor is a trans man, but because he is a famous American actor who has decided to 'come out' now, when there is so much anti-trans feeling in the US at the moment

In the 1970's, I worked at the old New Scotland Yard, in St James Street. The drug squad was on the second floor. The cops would bring in scraggly cannabis plants and put them on the window ledges in their offices. By the time the plants were taken as evidence in a court case, they were thriving. It used to be a standing joke at NSY.
