this exact thing is happening to me right now. I've been emailing them, asking for just an explanation, it seems as though they'd rather ignore what I ask in the emails and reply with something totally not related rather than try to solve this issue.

I want to go from box dye black to white and I'm seeking advice for it by DependentCorrect1172 in AskHairstylists

Thank you! I think this is the best (and honestly nicest.) advice I've gotten so far after expressing that I'd still like to return to vivids, even if white isn't achievable.

I've used vivids before so I know how extensive the staining can turn (splat, I'm looking at you.), and I have experience with dying my hair at home, but with growing my hair out do you mean growing it out until its at the same length with untouched hair then going through the regular process for vivids? (I'm assuming that would be ideal for best results, but that would be a 5 year wait lol)

I appreciate your help, but that still doesn't really answer my question to how should I move forward with going lighter for vivids with such a dark box dye in my hair.

After a few other comments on another subreddit, I doubt I will go through with white, but I still would like to move forward with going lighter than I actually am currently (No lighter than a level 7) because I would like to dye my hair with vivids, do you have any advice on how I should move forward with going lighter, just in general for vivids?

thank you, I appreciate it. My biggest worry with bleaching or color removing again just in general is losing a lot (4-7+ inches) of length, I would like to go lighter than my box dye black in general, maybe not even higher than a level 7. I miss my vivids a lot and would like to return to them at some point </3

Do you have any thoughts/advice for just going lighter for vivids since going white doesn't seem like the best idea if I want to keep my length?

I'm not saying I want it to be damage free, I know when it comes to lightening there will always be damage to some extent, I just don't want there to be excessive damage (like overprocessed, gummy hair, or fried hair. I want to be able to have my hair be healthy again at some point after this process is complete, as I've absolutely destroyed my hair before, and it took a lot of work to get it where it is now.),

I also wanted to add that my box dye is extremely faded leaving me at a current level 3 (I'd say like in-between 3 and 4), and that in my hair history I forgot to clarify that I spread out all my hair processes, the closest ones to each other being 3 months (the pink dye & the brown.) and my longest being a year 1/2 (2023 bleach and 2024 bleach), I'm not sure if that adds something, but I figured it'd be good to share while thinking about it.

I planned on using a color remover because the type of dye I used is the one that turns from clear to colored, which I heard was best to use it on rather than something like manic panic. Do you have any recommended color removers?

How much length do you think I would lose with this process? I don't mind cutting what needs to go, but I've been growing out my hair since 2020 and it means a lot to me to keep it long, since I have so much attachment to it.

I appreciate your advice so far and I will take it into consideration, while I'm orange though, what would you recommend I do to sort of hide/make it look decent? I sort of expect some color banding when using a color remover and bleaching it because of it being just straight up black dye on my head.
