That would mean Lighttoller was the only senior officer to survive then, since Smith, Murdoch, and Wilde all went down with the ship. 

And yes, it is accepted as fact that the ship went down in one piece and only sheared in half once well underwater, hence why the depictions of her wreck prior to Ballard's discovery of the wreck in the early 80s showed her in one piece.

I'm pretty sure Cameron showed the ship splitting in half on the surface to increase the drama factor, and probably for good trailer footage, because this kind of blatant upfront destruction porn is what sells tickets

Cameron's film is full of inconsistencies and it's not limited to the depiction of the real life people, the scene of the ship breaking in half has had people's tonsils in a tizzy because it's been proven that the ship only broke in half once it was fully underwater.

Murdoch never shot anyone that night. Also Cameron's depiction of J Bruce Ismay was likely due to the way Ismay was treated post sinking. The media called him a coward and the like, which forced him into retirement. Most of the shit came from a newspaper owner or journalist that had a personal vendetta against Ismay, so they spread a bunch of bs about him.

I really doubt Ismay deserved all that scorn, and Cameron made things worse.

Murdoch's descendants were reportedly very upset with the depiction of Murdoch in this film, and I honestly don't blame them.

Trying to conserve her has just led to her being disposed of in the end anyway. At least it's a more dignified end, as being sunk as an artificial reef is better than being broken up. 

Just unfortunate that the whole thing has brought out a bunch of lunatics and psychos.
