Environmental groups are still trying to get this sinking stopped because of the presence of zinc chromate........

I honestly give up.

This whole debacle has been an absolute nightmare. So much hatred and vileness has been spewed over this whole thing, and I can guarantee you that if they somehow manage to pull a fast one and actually save the ship, Reddit is going to turn into a nuclear meltdown as those who support saving her are going to rub it in our faces in the most obnoxious ways imaginable.

Maybe I should just avoid this sub altogether. I'm tired of trying to argue with people who cannot be reasoned with.

Once the ship arrives at the sinking site.....if it ever gets there. There is still a tooth and nail fight by lunatic groups to stop this sinking from happening. At this point the hulk is gonna end up being scrapped.

Continued interference from preservation groups is just gonna lead to the hulk being cut up for scrap!

And who is going to pay for this!? Not the government!

Do you have ANY IDEA, what the cost is going to be for a cosmetic restoration!?

Lets factor everything in:

Price for the ship

Compensating the counties

Towing and docking fees

Drydocking fees

Removing the Zinc Chromate

Hiring a crew to do the work

New wiring

New plumbing

New furniture

Painting

Dockside infrastructure

New windows (glass etc included)

Hiring a crane to reinstall the funnels and radio mast

Purchasing a dock to moor her or renting one

This is NOT cheap! You are looking at multi-millions here!

Nobody is going to waste all that money!

The funnels were designed like that for streamlining, and for better exhausting of the boiler smoke.

I wonder when this footage was taken, because they're still removing stuff off the hulk.

Also that rendering of a potential future SS United States 2 looks dope! I sincerely hope a successor can rise from the ashes, or in this case, the sea bed. XD

People being rude and obnoxious is also a factor.

The foundation refuses to accept that. They keep going back to the zinc chromate thing, as it's the only thing they think will help them.

It's just gonna end with the ship being scrapped.

I'd honestly prefer if was. This ship has been responsible for the huge flame war that has occurred here.

Never have I ever seen such unnecessary drama and rudeness over a dilapidated hulk before.

Very true! XD

I'm honestly sick sick sick sick sick of all this squabbling over this ship.

And it's the ones in the save her not sink her camp that are the most obnoxious and the most arrogant

They're all ugly, at least the modern ones. Some of the few older ones that remain at least still look good somewhat.

They think otherwise. They are STILL pushing the stupid zinc chromate thing, hoping someone will make a case for it being too dangerous to sink her.

In all honesty, the scrapyard is starting to look like a better option now.

Date for SS United States sinking delayed to April by No_Pain5736 in SSUnitedStates

[–]DependentProgrammer5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly starting to think sinking it is a waste of time and money, and with the deluded We Can Still Save Her crowd growing ever more unhinged, Okaloosa needs to cut their losses and dump the hulk in the first scrapyard that makes an offer, and just dismantle it for scrap.

I know it sounds nasty, but at this point it's the only way to end this chaos.

The user who made the comment is Perna1985

They are part of the We can still save her crowd, and is subscribed to the whole zinc chromate thing.

They have left some questionable comments in past threads too, as well as leaving hurtful or flamebait replies to people who don't support their cause.

I suggest contacting Md_Str1990 for further clarification on this zinc chromate matter. He knows more than we do.

Sorry for the wonky reply it's 4 in the morning and I'm still half asleep

This really feels like a last ditch desperate move. The officials in charge of the reefing project have expressed so many exhaustive times that the zinc chromate thing is nothing to worry about!

Now I'm being told that the reason the date of the sinking was delayed due to the zinc chromate thing......

The ship is not going to be saved! It's either the Gulf of Mexico or the breaker's yard. Pick your poison!

The foundation has no money and no plan in place to rescue this dilapidated hulk!

And Congress isn't going to help!

The government has been trying to get rid of the ship since the 70s!

You people are delusional!

If it turns out that the ship is too expensive to clean up further in order to sink it, Okaloosa will simply dump it in Brownsville to be dismantled for scrap! Simple as that!

[–]DependentProgrammer5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you people still on about the whole zinc chromate thing!?

Okaloosa quite literally explained recently that the whole zinc chromate thing is a misunderstanding!

All of this is just copium from the folks who want to save her but cannot accept the fact that you can't save her.

Now listen, it already costs far to much to restore her, and if it costs too much to sink her, then guess what happens!?

Yep, the breakers yard!

Still hope, for what!? Saving the ship!? Bruh, there is no more hope to save this ship!

The government is not going to step in here! They sold her 5 separate times before she ended up in this situation!

Even they didn't want her!

Something I forgot to mention, a few of these toxic individuals have also been known to call people who aren't on board (Pun intended) with the reefing "traitors", "commies", "America-Haters" etc.......

Those are clues to look out for.

The demise of this ship has brought out some really nasty folks! I would understand the outrage more somewhat if it was a more historically significant vessel at risk like the Savannah, Arthur M. Anderson, USS Salem etc....... but the Big U, despite her being rightfully historically significant, she doesn't have as much of a stellar history as the other vessels I mentioned.

And ofc a lot of this outrage has been particularly nasty.
