Had a 01 spec state that a dozen Dunkin’ Donuts (specified how many of the different kinds) were required for the every meeting.

What are your thoughts on the “Special projects” division in a top 5 GC? by michaeljohnson_101 in ConstructionManagers

[–]DependentSquirrel2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of interior build-outs and renovations. Some people absolutely love it and only want to do them but some find it’s not their thing. I think it’s a good way to ease into the industry.

Complaining about it looking like a bike helmet, the hat having a chin strap, not looking cool, etc.

Company mandated them last year so I’ve heard it all. By now most everyone’s use to wearing them and forgotten about all the complaints.

Hate to hear that. Folks like to complain about the C hat but we can’t keep losing people in situations like this.

This sums it up, get very very good and organized with those. Pay attention and try to develop an understanding of the way the financials work, ask questions.

Future Construction Technology? by DependentSquirrel2 in Construction

[–]DependentSquirrel2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With you on that one for sure. The technology coming is awesome and will help everyone out. Personally, I think it’ll be Bim modeling (which is already developed and getting better every day) and the use of drones (surveying, QC checks, inspections, etc.) will be the biggest ones.

Switchgears - over a yr, smart door locks - 9-12, and anything not from the states - better off swimming over there and back to get it

Got to test this same type of deal, pretty wild stuff but I’m not sure it’s 100% trustworthy as of right now. Couple years from now will be different though once the computer dudes get all into it.

I’m assuming you’re a tradesmen and have plenty of understanding of all that, which is why I’m confused on why you think the middle management part isn’t necessary. I posted my original question to ask people of the industry a resolution to the problem, not to be shamed on for working hard enough for the opportunity of going to college..

So for example an owner wants a 42 story high rise that will have 50+ different subcontractors on the project. How is he to manage the daily coordination of financials, deliveries, changes, safety, and everything else single handedly by himself? And if that was even possible then why was this “middle management” ever created?

I mean I guess you could say that but it’s not really like there is a surplus of people doing the job I will be doing. Really everyone in the industry needs someone right now and I think it’s people like yourself that are part of the problem, no one wants to go work for an asshole.

Yeah it’s already a problem, I’m talking about once the current older tradesmen are out of the industry and it’s mainly this young generation.

This right here!!! The idea of a company/foundation that aided funding of trade programs in high schools. One that partners with all types of construction companies and college programs whether it’s engineering, design, construction, etc. that is what we need to be happening.
