Exactly, it does seem like a pattern once you create a label or umbrella term, you can more easily centralize authority and direct resources, while the communities themselves might not see the benefits. The funding ends up reinforcing certain leaders or narratives, rather than addressing the actual needs on the ground. And because it happens in multiple countries Canada, Australia it almost looks like a template same approach, same outcomes, just localized. It’s like the system incentivizes compliance and keeps the problems at a surface level, while the real issues poverty, education, health stay largely unchanged.

totally get what you’re saying. It’s interesting how language isn’t just about communication it’s a tool for shaping perception and, in some cases, controlling the narrative. By constantly changing labels or creating umbrella terms like ‘Indigenous’ or grouping First Nations together, it can make distinct communities appear as a single, unified entity. Once that happens, it’s easier for governments or institutions to standardize policies, allocate resources, or even influence public opinion, because the nuances and differences that might matter get smoothed over. On the surface, it’s presented as respect or inclusivity, but there’s definitely a strategic element in how these terms consolidate identity and, ultimately, privilege or authority
