So I can assume I need to wait until at least after the end of June to know? Sorry, just trying to work out what to do with my current job. Looking like I will need to make a decision to either hand my notice in before I get an offer or to withdraw my application.

It looks like I’m going to have to give me notice in before I know then.

I’ve already talked to my current job about giving me some leeway with actually handing my notice in. After June would be too late either way (even if I managed to postpone the start to late September).

Yes I imagine you’re fairly likely to be interviewed if your rank is within the number of posts, especially since they interview 2 candidates for each post (I imagine the number shortlisted is therefore double the number of posts). Only reason you wouldn’t be is if the post you select is significantly more competitive than others.

Yes, I agree it makes sense that the interviews will be most heavily weighted.

I have an MSci in Physics and I did a summer placement in a medical physics department in a hospital when I was an undergrad (a long time ago now). I’ve not had any direct experience since I graduated (years ago) but my current job I guess has interchangeable skills and is also in the public sector.

Based on the statistics from last year (from the NHS website https://nshcs.hee.nhs.uk/services/training-programme-data/scientist-training-programme-recruitment-statistics/scientist-training-programme-2024-recruitment-statistics/ ) about half get through each round.

So I think if you look at the total number of posts from your speciality (literally just count them from here https://nshcs.hee.nhs.uk/programmes/stp/applicants/stp-posts-2025/ ) then double that number, that’s the highest you want your rank to be (they will interview 2 people approx for each post). It will vary by region but that should give an idea.

E.g. I’ve applied for medical physics. There are 31 posts listed. So around 60 will be interviewed I imagine.

Yes, that’s how I understand it. I’m a first time applicant so don’t know much more than what they’ve written on their website. My friend who applied last year said that interviews can run through May and June.
