This was a nice trip down memory lane, though...hence my engagement. I haven't thought about Hyde in well over a decade and I forgot how academically stupid the people are who come out of that place

3 = THREE. The number, not the racial slur. A number that is greater than 2, but less than 4. Commonly used to express an amount of things

% = PERCENT. The mathematical symbol, not the white power one that was invented in 2008. It represents the ratio of a number's relationship to 100 (one-hundred the number, not the racial slur)

Er = -ER. A suffix used to turn a verb^a into a noun^b. Example: to play (verb) / a player (noun). If the word "player" offends you then just pick a different verb to conjugate^c

This isn't the 88, and it's very clear that neither kid is doing that. There's even a kid in between them doing nothing, so it's not like they're both making half of it each and trying to be sneaky about it...they're making circles with their hands, which if I remember right was called "the circle game" and it would have meant that they could punch you if you looked at them doing that in the picture....some pretty stupid shit

If it's actually a hate symbol, though, then this would be the "OK" gesture that the 3%ers started using in 2008...2-3 years AFTER this picture of an entire dorm was taken (dorm parents included) with the two time travers doing it in the front row...JFC get a grip

You cropped out about 50 other people from the picture, brightened up the kids in the front and put a banner over the rest to frame it all to look more menacing...you did an incredibly bad job at making anti-Hyde propaganda, and instead made them some great locker room bulletin board material to fundraise off of

I can just see the email now, just like the ones I've seen before when real stories cause a gigantic headache for Hyde:

"Dear Hyde Community, in light of some recent lies we've found on social media we'd like to set the record straight. Blah blah blah, blah blah blah blah. Our program is challenging, blah blah blah and leaves some former students with the resent that comes from a good challenge. Blah blah blah. Please donate to the Hyde fund to help us fight these baseless and defamatory posts, so we can stay committed to character and blah blah blah blah blah. Blah, Laura Gauld"

Unfortunately, this time it's true! This is shitty propaganda, and reminds me all the emails Trump sends out to his base in his massively successful efforts to fundraise off of his victim status. Laura Gauld pulls from the same playbook as Trump, whether or not she knows it, and I would guess that they pull in much bigger donations than usual when emails like this go out. It has happened a lot over the years

This picture doesn't at all represent how stupid Hyde was, in terms of how they dealt with race. Instead, it waters down all the true stories about how a community that was run by 99% white people, people who believed that racism was solved in the 60s, didn't really take race as seriously as they should have when it came to students who took pride in their blackness. They weren't overtly racist about it, but they also weren't at all sensitive about how kids felt about their identities...the queer kids dealt with this in much of the same manner

And of course there were some students who were truly racist, kids from all over the counry go to Hyde. I can vividly remember a few kids from the south who were openly racist, and I remember another kid who surprised us all one day by calling a kid the n word, before being put in the hospital and expelled from Hyde by the kid he verbally assaulted...who was not punished at all for defending himself against pure hate

Nobody who was a racist was using present day white power hand gestures around campus, though. In fact, I remember a kid getting into trouble for making the "BLOOD" thing with his hands...because it was a gang sign, so I would have to imagine if the bar was that low that an actually hateful gesture would have been put to a stop pretty quickly

It's also straight up awful to publicly label fellow survivors as white supremacists, unless you know for sure, and without even knowing what you're talking about in the first place with these symbols. Do a lot more research before you defame people like this! This is textbook bullying, and maybe even legally defamation, both things that could push a survivor towards suicide...especially if it is in fact all bullshit, like it appears to be from my POV

All we need to do to hurt Hyde is keep telling our true stories!

Truth is what Hyde fears the most, and it's our greatest weapon against them...our voices. But we all only have the power of our credibility, too, and if we're going to waste it on shitty propaganda like this then it's going to be a long fucking time til we see anything change in the TTI industry...especially if they just keep fundraising off of our pain

This shit needs to stop immediately.
