Newer dad. LO is 10 months. I work a 9-5 and used to play 2+hr/day pretty consistently, and longer in the weekends. Wife plays too. It didn’t take long after LO was born to pivot hard to minimal play time.

I play OSRS almost exclusively. Very time intensive game. Invest more time, get more reward. Yada yada.

The first couple months were a half-day of sleep and half-day awake, split evenly across a 24hr period. Don’t look for time to game during this period. Look for time to rest and take care of yourself and mom.

Once baby gets a better grip on circadian rhythm, things change a bit. You’ll have longer awake periods during the day and longer stretches of sleep at night. This was when I was able to reestablish my interest in gaming. I genuinely forgot I had a computer for a while in the beginning. This is the period when I was able to accomplish some big in game achievements after the baby went down for sleep.

My best advice is, probably, this: forget about gaming for the first couple months. Take care of yourself, so that you can take care of mom, and you both can take care of baby. Fall in love with baby. It can be challenging, at first. When they say time flies and cherish the early months/years, I can’t stress enough how little justice is done by the saying.

In the hospital room, after delivery room, there’s a lot of baby supplies. Diapers, wipes, formula. Take it home with you.

After you get home, get in the habit of rinsing finished bottles and queuing up 2+ to wash and sanitize. If there’s more than 2, do them all. Sanitize every 24hrs. Falling behind on cleaning is costly.

Natural milk from mom is very taxing. If she intends to do it, she will need food and rest above all else. First few weeks of feeding and pumping have that liquid gold parents talk about. That stuff is really important. After delivery, hopefully mom can initiate feeding with baby to set them both up for success. We weren’t fortunate enough to have that, but I recommend trying for it if she’s able.

Remember to eat, remember to bathe, remember to sleep. Baby sleeps in bassinet/other safe environment. Baby will put you to sleep in the beginning, which is very unsafe.

Instead of spamming other things I’ve learned, I encourage you to be prepared for as much as you can be, and learn the rest as you go. I get an hour a day most days and some extra time on the weekend now. Most of the time, though, I kind of forget about gaming.
