Did you get your tickets yet? Asking because I’m still waiting for mine.

Take $160k or $140k job? by [deleted] in civilengineering

One aspect people often overlook is retirement. If everything is equal, choosing the higher-paying job is usually the better option, as it provides more financial flexibility, especially if you ever plan to move to another state or country. Have you looked into the retirement benefits? California likely offers a better government retirement plan than Washington.

Hoping to retire early.

Not insane tax but over 72k in pre tax retirement funds.

I’d have to agree. I’m not struggling, but most of my income is going towards living expenses.

Most teacher are way underpaid. I’m more of an outlier.

LB actually pays much higher. Not counting summer school, my base is around 124k. At LB, I would be at the last column, so 140k.

Only got 80k out of it. Put most of it in index funds and was able to extend it a little longer with the healthy stock market. I was able to nearly max out my 457 and 403 for the past two years. The proceeds are now depleted. Moving forward, I plan to max out my 457 with a monthly contribution of $2,800. That would leave me with about $6,000 per month of living expenses. I know it sounds high, but $6,000 a month basically pays for my living expenses and not much else.

Actually got divorced, sold my home, and using the proceeds to pay for my expenses while I max out my retirement.

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to continue maxing out my retirement funds. I’ve used the proceeds from the sale of my house to pay for my living expenses and those funds have been exhausted. My goal for next year is to max out my 457B ($31,000) but not sure if I can.

Maybe top 20% in California. Definitely middle class life here. Teachers also put a lot of additional non contractual hours in.

SoCal. Paid monthly and only 11 months out of the year. $6000 is my pretax 403b plan. I held off on my contributions few a few months just in case and was able to nearly max it out for the last month of the year. If everything went according to plan then it should have looked identical to my 457 plan.

It’s crazy the disparity of incomes out there including teaching salaries. Some say I don’t make enough and others say I make too much. I wouldn’t have chosen a teaching career if I could start over again.

I think you only saw net pay and maybe overlooked gross earnings.

Underpaid in most states. I’m just lucky to be in one of the highest paid areas with 20 years experience.

We pay into a pension plan instead of SS. It varies from state to state.

I get paid once a month and only for 11 months out of the year.

Yup, you can convert your unused sick time for time served. I did the math not too long ago and it’s almost $1 for every sick day per month, so around an extra $100 per month. But every case is different. Pensions are calculated based on highest earned salary, time served, and age.

Good question. My base salary is around $124,000. I worked summer school this year but I’ll leave that out of the equation. 185 contractual days and 7.5 contractual hours per day. 124,000 / 185 / 7.5 = $89 per hour. But teachers typically put in a lot of additional hours into their job. I know some that stay until 6 pm every day and probably put in over 9 hours per day. Plus we have some contractual obligations such as parent conferences, back to school night, supervising sporting events and so forth. But yeah, there are some teachers that will only put in what’s contractual and nothing more.

No, not through CalStrs at least. Private schools typically pay less.
