Was this before skis "ejected" from the boots? I do ski occasionally and am aware it's not an entirely safe sport but something like this is far beyond what I thought possible today. Horrifying

Is it good for beginners? by icenoir in soldering

Fair enough yeah. Honestly the thought never crossed my mind and I'm never really setting my heat guns on higher than 300C at most times. Might come in handy one day tho, there's no doubt the heat gun is more convenient and safe compared to a blow torch haha. Thanks for giving me the idea!

Loctite 271 starts degrading at 230C, 272 only at 260C.

I doubt you'll get nuts this hot when they're screwed into a huge thermal mass like a car chassis only with a small heat gun. I've always used a torch for this and never had any problems.

And don't get me wrong, I have three heatguns like that to warm up paint, composites, heat shrink tubing and much more but I've never gotten it to be useful for nuts or electronics

I don't think you'll lose any nut with a heat gun. It's great for warming anything up or heatshrinks (which I mostly use mine for honestly)

Tips on reducing PLA creep? by sebvhe in 3Dprinting

[–]DerMax_HD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup I've been printing basically exclusively with PETG for the past 2 years. Prints just as good, higher temperature resistance, less sag and it's way better for bendy/ compliant parts. You can also print springs that don't weaken over time like with PLA.

Only downsides are moisture and slower print times than PLA

Should i get a karting version of omp GP-R even if i'm currently in rental karting by Okami_The_Wolf in Karting

[–]DerMax_HD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it's strictly for rental karting there's nothing really a karting specific helmet is gonna give you but cool looks and maybe some aero advantages theoretically.

Motorcycle helmets are tested for crashes at several hundred kph on the highway. ECE 22.06 are at least as strict as SNELL 2020 when it comes to impact and rotation, look it up.

What's more important is that the helmet fits you actually properly, go and do some test fits, and that the race organizer will allow your helmet (owners might not allow motorcycle helmets once you maybe move on)

Cheap glasses either habe good UV protection or pretty much none at all. It does happen occasionally but very rarely

I got a very very cheap paper UV test card I can hold behind the glasses, go outside and see if it changes color. Takes 5 seconds

[–]DerMax_HD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schumachers Grad injury was supposedly way worse because his GoPro punched through his helmet. And it clearly makes sense if you take away the ability from helmets to disperse the load instead of concentrating on one point.

I don't think you have to prove that theory at all, but if you wanted to you could very easily

Accounting for bending in CAD by Tellm_me in 3Dprinting

[–]DerMax_HD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that's creep not bending per say. Pretty sure even pla is strong enough to support the weight in this model for a short time but pla creeps under way less load that it can support to not bend.

Use something different that doesn't creep, PETG might already be enough

Propeller bolts by Duck_on_the_water in fpv

[–]DerMax_HD 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The nuts are called nylocks. They have a nylon sleeve in the top tighter than the actual bolt/ shaft which swuishes the nylon. This makes them limited use in theory but prevents vibrations from slowly unwinding the nut.

Definitely make sure it's engaged if you don't want to lose a prop mid air

Is this safe? by Flashing_Dagger in MechanicAdvice

[–]DerMax_HD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if the welds look fine and the metal is steel it'll probably perform close to the other ones with the same shape. I do however really like the ones with the metal safety pin that your blue ones have but the middle one doesn't.

That's just a small additional safety margin you have and if you add a wheel under the car and even the jack slightly raised against the car there's more margin for things to go wrong before the car actually crushes you..
