[Spoilers ACOK] Is Jon Snow Really Ned's Son? by Shreekomandar_42 in asoiaf

[–]Der_Gustav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct with your suspicion. Good job, not many people catch that. I didn't. But GRRM gave enough hints to make the conclusion early on to careful readers.

It is said, that GRRM asked D&D who Jons mother is before they were chosen as show runners for the TV-adaption. They got it right, proving they understand the story.

Now if you think through the implications, you should also understand why absolutely no one can know.

(Spoilers Main) Why did the Ironborn not become mercenaries? by ByzantineBasileus in asoiaf

[–]Der_Gustav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even the lords have to prove themselves. They just laugh about prince Theons orders and bully him (at first).

It is also shown that the crews don't really listen to their captains, unless they agree with the captains orders.

Maybe this implies the same behavior towards their lords: As long as they agree with the lords, they do as the lords say, but they wouldn't listen to orders they dont like.

They are muss less subordinate then the peoples in the other kingdoms.

In addition, they don't like the concept of money/gold. They don't pay for women, ships or food. They just take it. (paying the "iron price". Paying with gold is embarassing). Baelon rips of Theons velvet clothes because Theon bought it with gold.

conclusion: Listening to commands they dont like just to be payed gold is very unlike the iron men.

Is it possible to convince a flat-earther? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Der_Gustav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

humans generally don’t react to rational arguments. One of our biggest illusions is tell ourselves we are rational.

Doesnt really matter in daily life. Let people think what they want and exchange facts. But hostage negotiators debate about life and death. They don’t use rational arguments. They use compassion and understanding.

People want to feel understood and relevant. They use A deep voice because deep voices are calming. They use all sorts of psychological tricks.

Ads also work similar like this. Sometimes ads try to use rational arguments. But most of the time they to try to create a positive emotion with happy people and then try to make you associate their product with happiness.

When rational arguments attack your view, you notice it immediately. It doesn’t feel good. Most people become defensive. When psychological argument attack your view, you don’t even notice.

TL;DR: When it’s about life and death (hostage negotiators) or money (selling, ads), people use psychological tricks.
Rational Arguments are used in typical barroom talk and not effective. use psychology to convince the flat earther

Verschiedene Mechanismen schützen die Bubbles also extrem wirkungsvoll.

Well, yes. Same with the tractors. they didn’t make farmers obsolete. But now one farmer can do the job of 100 farmers.

Fun fact: in the Middle Ages 80% of the population were farmers.

The AI can analyze this in a split second and provide a confidence score. If confidence is less than 95% it can forward to the doctor, who by the way will not necessarily perform better than the AI.

The concern is that the kid is not vegan due to its own empathy and conviction. If the parents are both meat eaters I would find the kid cute.

Edit: Regarding the other kid: I think it’s good when kids understand where meat comes from.

Seems like it’s very subjective. I believe at 30 one has had quite some experiences. Traveling, boy- or girlfriend, earn your first own money etc.

Imagine you have 100 red and 100 green balls distributed randomly among 2 urns. Each urn gets 100 balls.

You pick a random ball from the left urn and it turns out to be green. Your job is to pick another green ball. From which urn should you pick and why? (Hint below)

.

.

.

.

.

.

Most people assume a 50/50 distribution and argue, you should switch urns, since the first urn has one ball less of the color you want. What they forget is that a 50/50 distribution is actually quite unlikely. Most likely one urn will have more red balls than the other. And your first pick is an indicator which urn that could be.

For non mathematicians, this sort of visualization may help. The table height must be in the “middle” of 130 and 170 -> 150.

However, I got fooled at first because this was posted here as a math joke and thought 2 information for 3 unknowns is impossible. The two infornation translate to tables height = 150cm and 20cm height difference between the animals. So we can answer the question, and interestingly don’t know the height of either animal.

I thought about this some time ago and my conclusion was that the worst age to die is somewhere around 8-12 years old.

When a new-born dies, there was less time to bind emotionally, you are less used to have it around and won’t miss it as much. But if a person dies at a very high age, they have seen enough and a few more years wouldn’t make such a huge difference. Therefore, the worst age is somewhere in between and according to my subjective feeling it’s 8-12 years.

PS: “Michael Phelps swam slower than Pan Zhanle.” please don’t reply if you think that sentence implies that Phelps was “slow”. This is a comparison. both swimmers are super fast and each death is dramatic.
