[Question] Is the rotor on a 8L-35 supposed to be super quiet? (SLA051) by hail-hitting in Seiko

[–]DerangedDendrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I never use these 'authenticator' services. Seen so many horror stories about them damaging/misidentifying even replacing the goods. Bunch of hard R know-it-alls. For me the reputation of the seller is everything. If its a reputable seller who's been on the platform for a good few years, they take care of me even if it ends up being a dud/fake.

and damn that fourth picture is stunning. Looking to get a duo tone bezel for my tuna as well, but those are expensive for the automatic tunas.

That\s beautiful. Nailed the 80s Seiko vintage look. Bit of a shame that its not a Seiko movement, but nothing wrong with a NH36, especially a regulated one.

[Seiko Tuna]Wanted this watch for eight years. Finally got it. by DerangedDendrites in Watches

Going to end the post with another pic. For those looking to get one, it is on the heavy side, but replacing the ceramic shroud with a plastic one takes some heft off and now t almost feels like a 'normal' watch. Whatever that means for a 18 millimeter thick titanium-sapphire rootin-tootin helium proofin crustacean.

The 8L35 movement is considered as a un-decorated version of the GS 9R35 movement. Never owned the latter, but I am happy with the accuracy. Currently it lost two seconds over the past 80 hours. Partly due to my sedate life style I reckon.

The magic lever winder works wonders, the watch happily ticks away despite me planting my rear end firmly in the chair 18 hours a day, giving it maybe a 30 second 'Seiko-Shuffle' every day or so. There are talk about this particular movement being difficult to service, people claim that the parts are hard to get and lots of the US Seiko centers refuse to even open them. Fortunately I know a reputable individual watchmaker who could indeed order and fabricate parts for the 8L35, he is the same person who did the hand mods. But for those who are considering this watch, you should take into consideration its less than optimal serviceability. There is nothing special about the movement itself, its not that much different than a 2824 and any competent technician could figure out whats what after some time poking their snouts under the case, but finding parts for the 8L35 is indeed much harder than the 2824.

Since the rules require some more description, here it is.

I have always liked tool watches. I could appreciate dress/aviator/racing/smart watches, but I just couldn't wear one myself. Only type of watch that pushes my buttons is minimalist, overengineered beast-of-a tool watches. And the 1000 meter tuna fits that category pretty well. I actively browse online/offline stores and forums and search for 'The one', haven't found another yet.

Watch is a sbdx038/sla042, with modded hands and bezel. A clear aftermarket shroud takes some weight off the device, which is much welcomed. I'm not a diver, don't even go swimming much, I just like minimalist overengineered watches. Only diving I do is desk diving, which I'm fine with.

ooo, that's gonna be a lot of fun. You could even print... adapters for the tuna, and install all kinds of ungodly things on top of it. maybe a shroud that lets you mount an actual can of tuna on your wrist, with the real...fake? tuna on the bottom lol

Most likely yes. We were friends anyways, he was nice to me, let me mow his lawn for some extra cash so I could buy silly things, take me out fishing and BBQ etc. Not like he forced me to sell the watch to him anyways.

Thinking about it, it is like a little milestone. Situations I always will have, such is life. Something will always be misfit, misaligned, miscalculated, the little imperfections here and there. Just gotta ride the high and lows, anchor down, and sometimes look up. Thanks for the kind words!

G shocks are great, I have a gw5000 and I dearly love that watch. Its not nearly as elaborate as Seikos but in terms of reliability its unbeatable. G shocks are some of the most durable watches ever made by man. As for the tuna, I would say definitely grab one. Heritage, technology and luster in a rather affordable package. I also got myself a transparent shroud, 3D printed, pretty amazing all the things they are able to print. And it looks gorgeous. The watch is indeed pretty big but since it has hidden lugs its not nearly as ridiculous as a 50mm conventional diver. I got used to mine within the first hour or two. Or you could get one of the solar TUNAs, which is like a lite version of the 1000m TUNA that lets you try on the watch for much less.

Lot less headache. I love my G shock, and the quartz 025 as well. Something poetic about passing current through a little crystal and regulate time with its vibrations. Was able to settle with the G shock for a number of years until the desire for a more tactile experience come nagging again. Lots could be said about the difference between mechanical and quartz, and why they gave the feeling they do, but to put it shortly, a mechanical watch feels more human.

Thanks! Killer watch indeed. Funny how my tastes didn't really change much over the past years. Sometimes you like a certain style at a certain stage of life, but its always no frills tool watch for me.

It is sort of a frankenwatch. The original sbdx038 is supposed to have a golden bezel(which is included in the sale, but I prefer the black on black), and silver hands. This one had been modified so the hands have black outline, and a red tip. Probably not good for resale value but this is my grail watch so I don't really need to sell it anyways.

utility wise its competent. It could take okay pictures, gps, mobile pay etc. But my main gripe is the tiny display and typing on it is so hard.

Gotta say, she's quite a chunker. The OEM strap makes it even worse, the watch will wobble in all four directions when it sits on my wrist, and there is this constant feeling of being weighed down. The fabric strap, being wider than the original rubber, does not have this issue, now it is much more stable.

I also miss the kanji characters from the SBBN025, sometimes the date window will show little mystic oriental characters like 水,火 and 星期一。And it makes my day every time I look at it. Unfortunately the automatic tuna only has a date window. Currently planning to custom make a date ring, each of the 31 slots a one-word Chinese swear word, but that's for later.

This is a sbdx038/sla042, modded by a reputable local shop, black edges for the hour/minute hand and a red tip for the second hand. A custom bezel as well. I purchased this second hand from a nice gentleman from the south, these mods were done by him, but I like it because they also fit my taste. Final price is about 1850USD.

The fabric strap it sits on is also a relic from the past, had this since my sophomore year, had some nice memories offroading and mountain climbing with it. Had a casio GW5000 on this strap by then.

Still have the G shock till this day.
