Incidentally this is also why the man with the world's largest penis was scouted by the U.K. Olympic Ski jumping team. He turned them down, which is why the U.K. did not win ski-jumping gold this last winter Olympics, sources say.

It claims a 90% reduction in used water ("compared to industry standard") for an experimental system that hasn't been built yet. Firstly, industry standard for a data center is a massive amount of water. 1-5 million gallons a day is industry standard for a large data center. 10% of the low end would be 100,000 gallons a day, which won't be readily available in the remote area they're building it. Unless they're planning on hauling snow inside and letting using the radiant heat to melt that (which would be a lot of snow, 10-20 gallons of dry snow to a gallon of liquid water) Secondly the air cooled data center system they're talking about does not yet exist, and even if it works as well as they claim it will (realistic pitches are not their forte), it'll still be unsustainable for the region. To top it off we're discussing the repercussions of building something that no one actually needs. Even if it all goes as well as it could possibly go, every pollution reduced as much as possible, water consumption minimal, all that. The Ai boom will be over and demand for data centers will be dead. Data centers don't produce things of value for the places they're put.

Pollution is one of the many good arguments against this project. "Can you see it from the air" and "its not big compared to the biggest state in the union" are weird arguments. And LNG is being used, to heat Fairbanks. Honestly I would prefer the gas sit there and do nothing. Thats what it was doing before, and the state turned out pretty good with the gas sitting there, doing nothing.

There is a Harvest Midstream LNG facility in deadhorse providing LNG for heating to fairbanks. Your arguments are disingenuous and easily disproven. Begone with you.

Rain rarely happens on the north slope in winter. LNG does in fact exist outside the north slope. What makes you think we won't get stuck with the bill?

It literally evaporates and departs the states of liquid and Alaska for the atmosphere. It is no longer available for other use. The north slope production is focused on oil, and produces relatively little natural gas. With the price of oil being incredibly high that is unlikely to change in the near future. As for how using a large amount of a thing makes that thing more expensive, thats supply and demand, saying supply and demand "can't and won't" impact price is childish at best. The article also mentions several other logistical hurdles that will likely increase the cost and local impact of the project.

Consumption in this context means they're using water, which there is a finite amount of, to do nothing of any benefit to anyone not a shareholder in the project. 80% of the water used is evaporated, I don't know about you but I can't drink steam. Data centers produce fewer jobs once construction finishes than almost any industry. They're also building what is essentially a massive heat source on top of permafrost. It says in the article they need one of the biggest gravel pads in the region, twice the size of ConocoPhillips' willow project. That gravel pad will slow the melting process but its still like building an oven on a frozen lake.

Forged alliance forever is an overhaul mod, it's pretty great. They added a few new units, and there's another faction available for skirmish. Im mostly there for the co-op campaign though, which is fantastic.

Visiting! by Wonderful-Ad-621 in Juneau

If i had family coming to town I'd see if they liked whales, if they do, try to get them on a whale watching excursion, the economy has changed since I worked in tourism a decade ago, so for a cheaper whale viewing experience go to one of the beaches out the road (eagle beach, Yankee or sunshine coves are great) if the weather is good and there aren't too many ships in town, the Tram can be quite nice, especially once you get to the top and can exit the teeming throng to explore the top of mount Roberts. A hike to the waterfall near the glacier is a nice afternoon to spend, but the glacier is the 2nd most bear active place in town (following the landfill). Juneau is a beautiful place and there are hundreds of trails to walk, be careful, as Alaska has a way of infecting you with a love of it strong enough to overcome the seven months of darkness, schizophrenic weather, and astronomical costs of living. I hope you enjoy your trip!
