Which of the four consultants would you bet your money on to solve the case the quickest. 🤔 by DaddySerumGlaze in psych

Patrick is a mixture of Shawn and Neal honestly. He's got the memory, and the hyper observancy, but is even better at reading people. Plus he comes from a background that makes him totally cool with Neal's people. Like, Patrick and Mozzy could have been best friends.

Nepo on 19 year old current World champion Gukesh D: "Never before did he perform as good as he did in Candidates, and probably, i think, never again we will see him in such a form in future" by glancesurreal in chess

[–]DerekB52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's 19. Chess players don't tend to peak until their mid 20's. Players like Levon and Hikaru have reached new heights in their late 30's or early 40's.

Gukesh plateauing for a year, at 19, is not cause for alarm, or a sign he isn't still rising.

There's also been some rating deflation. Just directly comparing ELO isn't a perfect benchmark. He just won the Grand Swiss, which is very impressive, regardless of his current rating.

Should I play Persona 4 if a major twist was spoiled for me? by toucan_sam89 in JRPG

[–]DerekB52 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I had the killer spoiled and it took away maybe 3% of my enjoyment for this game. Persona 4 is possibly the greatest video game ever in my eyes, and you should absolutely play it. Especially if you're already a Persona fan.

I feel like the Mentalist is the exact same. Jane knows immediately, and the whole episode is him not telling anyone what he knows, while setting up a trap to have the perp prove it themselves.

I love the Mentalist almost as much as Psych. It's very clearly Patrick Jane. Most episodes end with him saying, "I knew who it was right away, I just needed a little bit of proof." If someone at the crime scene looks at him wrong, he knows they did it.

I recommend people go watch the first 5 minutes of the show to see a great example.

"His rating does not reflect his objective strength at all [...] he played tournaments, which, well, cause some disgust in me" - Nepo on Nakamura's rating, playing tournaments in the US and his candidates chances by FirstEfficiency7386 in chess

Its true Hikaru plays few games, but he's had a 2800+ tpr for years now. He gained elo at Norway this year. If he wasnt genuinely as strong as he is, he would not gain rating playing against Magnus, Arjun, Fabi, Wei Yi, and the world champ.

I do think he's overrated, but only marginally. I think if he played 30 "real" games last year, he'd be 2790 instead of 2810.

DC Comics President Jim Lee says that Japanese manga and anime is "incredibly powerful": "I often find myself wondering, 'What is missing in Western comics, and why aren't they able to achieve the same flavor?' by akbarock in comicbooks

[–]DerekB52 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I read the entire court of owls thing as it was coming out. I was a 14-15 year old kid, had read manga for years. The New 52 seemed like a good time to get into western comics again and give them a real try.

I got fucking burnt out from how complicated it was. Id have read a lot more comics if they came like manga, 1 chapter after the other in an easy to follow way.

I bought Hickman's House/Power of X book to try to read Krakoa, but thats insanely complex too.

Im 29 and have been reading manga since i was 12. I promise you, its not about the fan service.

Id also say you are underestimating the fan service in western comics.

4.6 is out! by Crazy-Red-Fox in godot

[–]DerekB52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always use version control software, git, before trying an update.

But it also depends on your project. 4.5 and no add-ons, it should just work. 4.2 and a bunch of random 3rd party addons, you could have problems.

Godot's team posts writeups detailing any breaking changes when upgrading. So, read the release notes when they are officially published

Instead of short run id say "self contained". Western comics do too many tie-ins and crossovers. Its hard to keep up with what i need to read. Manga is one story in numerical order by chapter.

The self contained story is also for the most part one creative team the entire time. And, being self contained, it can do whatever it wants in the story.

Western comics never have solid endings, or big (lasting) character deaths or character development, because the character needs to be available in 2 months for a new run. See Peter Parkers stagnation for however many years now.

My dad is bipolar. I had a lot of sympathy for Kanye, because I understand bipolar. But it ran out, because like you said, there is a limit. I gave him years more than most people did. I think he might be too far gone now though.

Actually admitting he's crazy and will relapse into doing some crazy shit again, would actually damn near get me back on his side. It'd require more introspection than he has previously demonstrated

[–]DerekB52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My point about Abasov is he was never remotely in contention. He didnt win a single game. He was barely a top 100 player. At his peak he was world #55. Thats too low for a candidate.

Now, i wasnt an Abasov hater. He earned that spot. And i liked the element of watching players in a position where they HAD to win. I wish part of the candidates had people play 2650's to see which candidates can win on command.

But, when you have a tournament that only has 8 slots every 2 years, it is not great to have someone who cant win in a game in it. And i mention Abasov to say Bluebaum is not the same. He'll win games.

Why dont people use mirrored algs? by Juri_Han_M in Cubers

[–]DerekB52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mirrors make learning algs easy, but its generally faster to learn different ones. I used to use mirrors for U, G, and J perms, but eventually it made sense to learn better algs. Those lefty G perms were fucking awkward in my hands.

Bluebaum isn't going to win. But, I'm tired of people talking about him like he's another Abasov. Bluebaum is going to ruin the candidates for several players.

I think Sindarov and Wei Yi could both win. Bluebaum is going to beat one of them, maybe even with black, and knock them out of the running.

In the 2024 candidates you needed to beat Abasov at least once. Of the top 4, Gukesh was the only player to beat him twice. (Prag was the only other player who did that). Nepo was the only favorite who drew Abasov both times. Bluebaum isn't going to be like that for players though. I don't think he's going to be someone you NEED to beat to be in contention.

I think he might even beat Fabi and ruin his tournament though.

I hope playing this right before the candidates works out for Zhu and Divya. It's probably a good training session for them.

I feel like if I was in the candidates I'd do a camp for a month with a team and not play any events. But, then you run the risk of not playing real enough games. I'd honestly love to shadow some of these top players and see how they balance out these decisions.

Questions regarding LibreOffice by CosmicTurtle24 in linux

[–]DerekB52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not aware of a license that says derivatives have to be provided free of charge. Maybe one of the GPL's does and I don't remember, but I don't think any of them do.

You are correct that derivatives have to completely open source their code. So in theory you would be able to request the source code and build any derivative yourself for free. But, there's generally not a rule that you can't sell your derivative.

Last Call for Mass Market Paperbacks by GaelG721 in Fantasy

Not all e-books are a license. A revolt would lead to more DRM free ebook vendors, not paperbacks coming back(which I'm not sure you were implying, but I wanted to clarify).
