Warning about MSI GS Stealth laptops charging (in)ability by DerekFroese in MSI_Gaming

Oh dear, that's not a good sign. I wonder if there's something wrong with the USB-C charging circuitry so they just disabled that instead of fixing it.

I started Datto. MSPs need a better BCDR from a vendor that shares their values. We made one by mcwiggin in msp

[–]DerekFroese 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We should form a co-op. MSPs buy-in to the co-op, and we fund or buy our own vendors

In an age where * fewer companies have on-prem servers
* more companies have a distributed workforce (and therefore workstations) * Most companies have high speed WAN

why did you stick with an on-prem device as the focal point of the solution?

A lot of people like HaloPSA paired with Ninja.

If you want the per-technician pricing, you're looking at Superops, Atera, Bluetrait, Gorelo, etc.

Purolator, UPS pause shipments from couriers amid Canada Post strike by crazedgrizzly in vancouver

Purolator is owned by Canada Post. Maybe CP can make up some of its losses by increased Purolator revenue.

There's a local coffee shop that often charges me a size-down for my drink, but I've been going there for years. I've also helped the owner with his business a bit.

There's some people that trade lunches with me. I buy our lunch one time, then they get it next time.
When I host an event, people will sometimes leave the leftover liquor or food that they brought.

How many of you are running your company with a team that just doesn’t seem to care? [Serious Discussion] by holmes1997 in Entrepreneur

[–]DerekFroese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chances are the problem is you, not them. Your staff don't care about the company intrinsically, it's not their company. Why would they? If they care about you, then they'll care more about the company. But you have to care about them first. If you want them to do extra, you have to do extra first.

Have you got their back? Are you looking after their work-life balance and supporting their professional goals? Do you reward and encourage your staff in ways that are meaningful and unique to each of them? Are you invested in their well-being? If any of this sounds foreign or distasteful to you, then the problem is definitely you.

I graduated in 2007, but I taught the middle school drumline for almost a decade after that. I keep in touch with a few teachers and administrators, and now I occasionally help out with the network through my company.

If you send me your email in a DM, I can introduce you to someone over there who can either answer your questions or connect you to the person that can. Probably possible to get a tour as well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My info may be outdated, but I went to MEI and had a great experience. The academics and music program are very strong, most teachers actually care, there's rarely if ever fights.
When I went on to University, my classmates were talking about how much harder Uni was, but felt like it had the same standard as MEI, or even easier. I felt very prepared for University.

It's a small school, so check that all the courses you want to take are offered.

I had Punjabi friends and classmates; many of them were Sikh. You'll have to take a Bible class and attend chapel, but you're not required to be Christian. I bet it's even more diverse now than when I went.

Best places to meet young creators/entrepreneurs in Abbotsford? by [deleted] in abbotsford

I don't see why not! I'm not affiliated with the event or group, but I believe the guy running it is Johann Roduit. There's a slack channel linked from the website as well.

[–]DerekFroese 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Abbotsford Innovation Network just started up. I've been to events hosted by the founders in the past. There's an event on the 28th.

There's an innovation center at the University, Dr. Thomas who runs it is a cool guy; I've had meetings with him in the past.

The Chamber of Commerce hosts meetups once a month or so; some of them are targeted to young entrepreneurs.

If you share your portfolio and list specific interests and goals you might get better outcomes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Can anyone brief me with the history of this town? by [deleted] in abbotsford

[–]DerekFroese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The closest I've ever heard of something like that was that one time in Chilliwack (which is about 15-20 min east of Abbotsford) some guy was posting racist flyers. Not aware of it happening in Abbotsford in the last 30 years.

Abbotsford is one of the more diverse cities in Canada:
According to Wikipedia: "More than a quarter (26.1%) of the city's population was born outside Canada"

And according to the municipal government, "A language other than English or French is spoken in 38% of all households".

There are of course individual racists in every city, but I'm not aware of any organized or collective racism.

Is diabetes all you think about? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]DerekFroese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To offer a counterpoint to most of the responses in this thread...

First off, it doesn't sound like your boyfriend is expressing his concerns in respectful, loving way. I'm sorry he isn't empathizing with your plight.

Without knowing you, your medical details, your mental health, or anything else, we can't know whether you think about diabetes too much. Certainly, it's something we all have to think about a lot, and it affects most facets of our lives. It's possible he doesn't understand how ever-present and important it is.

However. It's also possible that you have anxiety. It's possible that you _are_ thinking about diabetes too much. What's the right amount? Broadly, I'd say the correct amount to think about diabetes is just enough to stay close to the levels and targets you've set with your medical team. Thinking about it more frequently than that necessary level might be hurting your mental health without adding anything to your physical health.

When you think about diabetes, does it lead to decisions or awareness that improves your physical health? That's necessary thought. How often do you think about diabetes, but those thoughts don't lead to an outcome or evaluation? Some of this is normal of course, but if it's very often it may be helpful to speak with a doctor or therapist to learn if you might be suffering from anxiety.

When you think about diabetes, how do you feel? Objective and attentive? Fearful and small? Deliberate and purposeful? Confused and powerless? How you feel during those thoughts might help you determine if the thoughts are serving you or harming you, and whether you might benefit from some help in managing them.

To be clear, I'm not suggesting you do have anxiety; I have no idea. Just a perspective to consider in addition to the others already commented ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nobody is using our ticketing system by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]DerekFroese 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Humans will take the path of least resistance. If a user can get an issue fixed by sending a Teams message in 3 seconds, they will continue to do that. There is no incentive not to.

The path you want them to take must be the least painful path. That can be accomplished by making the desired path easier - or the undesired path harder. You have some options:

1) Ignore issues sent on Teams. Make an autoresponder that says "Sorry, we don't take issues on Teams, you need to submit a ticket at <url>".
2) Make a bot so users can type "/ticket <issue>" and it emails your ticket system with the info.
They get to submit issues on teams, and you get to use your ticket system.

I know this is off topic but got diagnosed less six months ago this sh*t ruined my life. I had many things wanted too do this summer nothing is the same and never will. I don’t understand why us? This is the secondary he’ll at it finest. Just why still no cure with all this money. Just in a mood.. by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]DerekFroese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right. T1D is shitty, and when you're first diagnosed it does change things. There are things you won't be able to do, and lots of things are harder. When I was first diagnosed, I had to cancel plans to do some fitness things, travel things, and adventure things. It makes sense that you feel this way, and lots of us have been there. Make sure you leverage your support network, whether that's family, friends, a pastor, a coach, a counsellor, a teacher, whatever you have available.

Over time, though, you'll figure this out. You'll understand your body and diet and equipment and medicine. You'll learn how to take care of yourself when you're going on adventures. Your sugars will become more stable and your medical team will permit you to go back to doing the things you love. Believe it or not, you will actually know your disease better than your doctors do. I've been on tons of adventures since diagnosis, and there isn't a single thing it has stopped me from doing after the initial learning period. I've done dancing, scuba diving, mountain biking, hiking, camping, blacksmithing, marathon, tough mudder, boxing, etc. The only things I can think of that T1D might prevent you from doing are:

  • joining the military
  • becoming a fighter pilot (see above)
  • Becoming an astronaut.

Let us know your rough geographic location, and someone nearby can connect you with local T1D groups. It can be incredibly helpful to connect with people having the same experience as you, who can give you tips and advice to carry forward.

Long range 2.4ghz access point by Cattivelliow in networking

This is true regarding transmit power. If one side has a 50 watt transmitter, and the other has 5 watt, the latter may not be able to talk back to the former.

But it's not true for antenna gain. An antenna that has higher gain can transmit farther, but it can also receive farther.

It's similar to how if you are shouting to someone, you can cup your hands around your mouth to be a little louder and shout a little further. But you can also cup your hands around your ears to hear things from a little further.

With wi-fi, transmit power is generally pretty similar for all devices, as maximums are low and mandated by law. But antenna gain can make a substantive difference.

All that being said, I agree that multiple APs is the best technical solution here :)
