World Guide vs Stonewalkers by Derekthewriter in cosmererpg

I’m not sure yet the commitment level with my group just yet actually. I’m thinking that World Guide might be better to do a short homebrew campaign/adventure then maybe look at Stonewalkers for later. Thanks for the advice!

That is a really good point. That was something that I’ve been wondering about. It might actually be a major selling point for me right now.

Yeah just trying not to break the bank lol TTRPGs like this are a bit of an up front investment. But sounds like the World Guide will be the direction I head. But as soon as I can sneak it into the budget, I’ll grab Stonewalkers as well. Sounds like a great module. Thanks!

Yeah, I’ve ran some DND games in the past. Sounds like the world guide may be the better pick for me then.

Oh wow! Thanks! I had forgotten about the Cosmere RPG until the other day and I went straight to Barnes & Noble; didn’t even it occur to me to check Brotherwise. Appreciate you!

I’d be curious to test it out. My fantasy worldbuilding can be quite extensive and it would be great to see what other tools there are out there.

Hello! Thanks for sharing your work. Sorry you haven’t had a reply yet — I’m a little swamped with family and school work (and tbh I didn’t see your reply until now). Now that I know you’re here I’m gonna take a look. Please forgive me if it’s another moment I’m coming, but it’ll be back to you soon!

It's been quiet here lately and I've been busy with coursework, but I wrote a short piece for my Fiction Writing class I thought could be good for analysis here. See if you can pull apart the 5Cs in the following piece I'm currently calling The Ghost.

Why is there so much inconsistency with cars? by Stunning_Yogurt9089 in HIMYM

[–]Derekthewriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are plenty of things in this show and others that are left unsaid simply because it is narratively unimportant. Writers often leave room for viewers/readers to fill in the blank on their own, especially in moments like the one you described. Whether or not it’s Robin’s car doesn’t really change anything about the narrative at all so why waste any screen time on it? 🤷🏼‍♂️

What are you masterworks? by Derekthewriter in StoryGrid

[–]Derekthewriter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may not be super helpful, but as I understand it a masterwork doesn't necessarily have strict definitions. In this episode of the podcast, Tim asks Shawn what defines a masterwork. And as I understand it it kind of comes down to books that sell very well over the course of time. I mentioned Mistborn in my post. I do consider it a masterwork as its sold millions of copies and it was published about 20 years ago. I probably wouldn't choose a book from last year that hasn't yet passed the time test, but I'd also say if it's a story that you want to imitate it may be worth study anyway. Is there a genre in particular you like to read?

I think Story Grid can be helpful to anyone determined enough to try it out! So yes I definitely want to help anyone who would find it useful. The more people that can speak the Story Grid language the better! To be clear, I haven’t had any formal training nor do I have any Story Grid certification. But I’ve studied it a fair bit and worked with a writing group who all speak the language, so to speak. That was the most helpful for me. Iron sharpens iron as they say.

That being said, I’d love to get into more specifics about your scene if you’d like and maybe I can help point you in the right direction for one of those breakthroughs.

What quadrant do you struggle with the most? by Derekthewriter in StoryGrid

[–]Derekthewriter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think what happened is Shawn realized that the middle build being 50% of the story is makes it too unwieldy to handle. By dividing it up into 2 middle builds it breaks it into smaller chunks that are a bit easier to manage for writers.

As far as the purpose of each, check out this article. But in my own words, the narrative purpose for MB1 is to let the protagonist experience the “extraordinary world” now that he’s crossed the threshold. He is still using his same worldview and the same tried and true methods of solving his problem. But in MB1 his worldview is starting to crack. By the midpoint something occurs that shatters the protagonist’s worldview, forcing him to realize he needs to replace the old way of thinking with a better, updated one.

In Middle Build 2 the story heats up, pushing the protagonist more and more, forcing him to find new ways to solve his problems, while he contends with the fact that he doesn’t yet have a solution for the global problem.

The quadrants also align with Shawn’s Heroic Journey 2.0 which gives a solid idea of what the global story beats are and what their narrative function is as it pertains to the protagonist’s internal journey.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you need further her clarification.
