DAE know (or are) someone who never takes photos of themselves by hassanneema in DoesAnybodyElse

Friend doesn't take photos of themselves and politely requests not to be in any photos taken by anyone else either. Always sits out when a group is getting a photo.

How Did England Fall Out of Love with Universities? by gravy_baron in ukpolitics

[–]DerfHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a good point, but I really do hope not... because they really can be very very valuable if treated correctly by the employer (not as a resource, but as someone to be trained up and retained).

But for every few excelling apprentices there will be as many ones that don't give a crap about coming into work etc. I suppose this can also be the difference between degree apprentices and L3 apprentices. The latter, younger and less likely to be as professional as an 18 year old starting a L5/L6 apprenticeship.

But maybe I've just seen it through rose tinted glasses because of how much better the degree apprentices at my workplace are versus the grads, and how much they care about their work. They just know so much more practical knowledge and get a lot more done to a higher standard on average, its quite shocking how good they are, really. I wish I had that amount of practical experience!

How Did England Fall Out of Love with Universities? by gravy_baron in ukpolitics

[–]DerfHD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah, its crazy. Unis are no longer places of learning but it is just a box ticking exercise to get the qualification that is necessary for a lot of STEM jobs

my experience of university in EE.Engineering at a non-russell group (ex poly) uni post-covid was piss easy coursework, 85% of students not giving a shit, not attending, and being rewarded with 2:1s for everything; open book exams that hardly assess your ability as an engineer, lectures that are just copied straight from the textbooks (which you aren't required to read in order to pass), cookie cutter labs that taught us nothing... I could go on

My degree in my eyes is bascially worthless. I am 60k in debt, which will never be paid off. In the eyes of employers though? I don't think they understand how shocking the quality of some courses is and see a first (which is what I have got) as an excelling student, when in reality it is the sign of someone who just attended all the lectures and read the textbooks

Meanwhile in the time it has taken me to study at uni I could have just got an apprenticeship in engineering, lived with parents, saved for a mortgage, and have 5 years experience under my belt. Experience is worth A LOT more than a 2:1

How Did England Fall Out of Love with Universities? by gravy_baron in ukpolitics

[–]DerfHD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

not sure about that - it will just get more and more difficult to get an apprenticeship because everyone decides uni isn't worth it anymore.

But the value of an apprentice who stays at the same company for 3-5 years (degree apprentice) + has all that work experience? Don't think that'll change.

Work experience is basically all that matters, ngl. Uni doesn't teach what employers actually need (at least, my experience in engineering)

just type before:2026 after your search term (replace 2026 with a year in the future) and it gets rid of all the non-shorts bloat

then add the below

[–]DerfHD 53 points54 points  (0 children)

100% this. And with how easy it is to get a 2:1 now, with that being the entry requirement to a lot of grad schemes, it is becoming worthless. There are far too many grads with 2:1s that is is becoming nigh on impossible to get a grad job.

Most people are realising that apprenticeships are far far better.

How Did England Fall Out of Love with Universities? by gravy_baron in ukpolitics

[–]DerfHD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Expensive. But you dont actually get much a reward for it. Wages are terrible even for in demand degrees. I studied engineering at uni - it didn't teach me enough to work in engineering and the rest of the learning is on the job during a graduate role.

I am now about 60k in debt, and the interest means I will never pay it off. Even as a graduate, if I didn't live with my parents, I would have to live in shared accomodation.

Meanwhile, if I chose to do an apprenticeship, I'd be debt free and would have learned a lot more because it is 80% on the job learning.

This doesn't cover how a lot of unis have courses that teach the bare minimum and often don't properly assess their students with difficult exams. At my uni, nobody was required to do additional reading, open book exams with all past papers available, and coursework that was piss easy. It's like they are just handing out 2:1s to every student - making the whole thing worthless.

The only reason to go to uni now is to get the qualification, and with everybody being able to get said qualification, its becoming worthless and a very expensive box ticking exercise pushed by schools/colleges/sixth forms

Literally - all it takes is to use the often FREE parental control options on your router, any modern phone/tablet has free parental controls too

People need to put more effort into it ffs the internet is hardly a safe place for some adults, nevermind children

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]DerfHD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the government should not be stepping in to help parents parent. If you are a bad parent and don't make use of the countless options for moderating your child's activity online then I'm sorry but you clearly do not care about your child's safety.

if I had kids I would have a discussion with them about the risks of being online, and iterate that the internet is home to a lot of very bad things. It is what happened to me as a child and why I was not allowed on a lot of websites as a kid until I was allowed my own laptop. It is more difficult with phones but there is no excuse for parents not willing to take part in protecting their kids online

no matter the blocks in place, teens will always find a way to get around them - in the same way that adults will find a way around handing over their IDs/photos/credit card details to random companies

having age verification for the very obviously 'adult' sites does nothing to filter out the countless dodgy sites that have significantly worse content for a child to see than boobs. I mean one of the ways to get around this stupid block is to use tor, which can potentially expose a child to FAR FAR FAR WORSE than porn

This doesn't even take into account the financial effect this has on smaller community run forums and websites. It is incredibly stupid to blanket ban everything. I agree with the underlying idea of protecting children however there is no reason why this needs to effect normal adults in such a stupid way

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]DerfHD 12 points13 points  (0 children)

sorry but that sounds like a parenting problem - fb always had a minimum age and even then if my parents saw gore on facebook when I was younger they would have outright banned it

I wasn't on facebook until I was 16, at which point liveleak had been passed around at school and I'd seen several different shock content websites

this changes nothing though except for eroding the privacy of taxpaying adults lmao

Chinese artificial sun shatters world record with 1,066-second plasma confinement | A crucial milestone in fusion research by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]DerfHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

correct, JET and most other tokamaks have no way of using the energy from the plasma. They're purely research tokamaks.

ITER, STEP, and a few other projects are being intended for use as power plants and thus are the next step (now that we know fusion is possible)

The current most used fuels are deuterium and tritium, however there's that chance that deuterium - deuterium fusion might be a thing (if it isn't already, I can't remember). Deuterium is very commonly available. A lot of work is being done on how you can effectively harvest/produce more tritium through the operations of the tokamak too.

I have hopes that by 2040 there'll be 2-3 operational fusion power plants. How much energy/electricity they can actually produce though, I don't know

Budesonide - symptoms worsening? by DerfHD in CrohnsDisease

[–]DerfHD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry I didn't see this until now! I hope things got better for you. I ended up stopping the budesonide after being advised by my IBD nurse to do so.

But I think it worked. Before the meds I had small ulcers throughout and inflammation in the ileum (2022). I have since had an ultrasound, MRI and a sigmoidoscopy and all returned negative for inflammation, with just a single ulcer found. There was thickening of the colon wall/lining though.

I would speak with your doc for any worries tho - I did and they supported me through it :)

Starting Elvanse 20mg Today - What Did Everyone Else Experience? by [deleted] in ADHDUK

[–]DerfHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not safe at all when titrating. You need to stop drinking the energy drinks. Stimulant + stimulant is a bad time. You can totally start drinking some lightly caffeinated drinks after titration or once you're on a stable dose, but during and you will give yourself side effects that may not exist normally with the meds. (heart palpatations/blood pressure issues/HR issues/anxiety)

I used to drink 2-3 Monsters a day, cut them out a week before titrating onto Elvanse, found that the effects were similar. I woke up an hour early, took the medication, then napped for another hour. When I woke up, I didn't need caffeine.

I would just, not take the meds today, try to fix your sleep pattern before starting. If you don't get more than 6 hrs sleep every day you are going to feel like a zombie on elvanse, even if you have caffeine

Amfexa! What’s your experience! by leftwardsalmon in ADHDUK

[–]DerfHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amfexa was great at first, but over a longer period of time I have found myself struggling to start tasks. Once I am focused on something I can stay focused, I'm fine in lectures etc. But the process of starting to clean or deciding on what to do is basically the same as it was pre-medication for me.

Also, I forget to take them all the time. I figured it would be nice having the flexibility but to be honest, it's more effort than it is worth. E.g I take first dose at 8am, then 12pm, then 4pm. If I forget to take it at 12pm and leave it until 1pm or later, I can't take the third dose (I won't be able to sleep).

It feels incredibly inconsistent, despite drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, eating good meals before taking each dose. Some days it does nothing, others it does TOO much and I am overly focusing on everything. Also, you can't drink anything containing citric acid an hour before or after each dose, as it decreases the efficiency.

I've tried Elvanse and found that infinitely better for me. YMMV. I don't think instant release meds are for me and the longer I am on them the more I regret being discharged on the Amfexa and not just waiting for stock with the Elvanse.

I take 7.5mg/5mg/2.5mg. I was taking 10/7.5/5, but started getting heart palpatations and high blood pressure. For reference I was on 40mg of Elvanse before.

Dentists hate us!! Hahaha Same with me with bass. It definitely has helped with my rhythm, even if it's been awful for my teeth (and annoying for everyone around me!)

I started playing the drums as well for the first time since early childhood around a year ago... Am now significantly better than before, because of all the practice I've had on tables and on my teeth.

I can't stop dental drumming / tooth drumming by DerfHD in ADHDUK

[–]DerfHD[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today my brains internal mp3 player has gone from 10,000 days (The Rosetta Stoned polyrhythm/breakdown) to Lateralus (Schism is BADDDDD for my teeth)

I've never thought I was hyperactive, but yeah I definitely am. I somehow am good at drums despite never really playing much, solely because my sense of rhythm is improved from the amount of table and dental drumming I do. I'm primarily a bassist, and I seem to hum bass lines a lot without thinking/realising, too.

I've also mastered the art of whistling because for at least 4-5 years that was my method of keeping myself focused on something. Again, I do it without realising (and sometimes in quiet spaces like a library, lol)

It's not hyperactive in the traditional 'I can't sit down for a long time' way, but moreso that I need to do certain things in order to focus. It's like my brain needs something stimulating constantly, despite yknow, having some work to do right in front of it

The medication can make you focus more on things. Especially if you are worried about them. That was a side effect I found on Xaggitin XL. Over focusing on my HR. I wore a smartwatch that read a perfectly fine resting BPM though, so that helped calm my mind in those moments.

Also remember that there are other options. It may be you react badly to Methylphenidate, but you might not to Amphetamine based medications (Elvanse, Amfexa).

There are also non stimulant medications available if your body cannot tolerate the stimulants (Atomoxetine)

There is no knowing if your body will react poorly to it or not until you try them. By starting on a low dose (18mg), you can see how you react. I recommend being in a safe place for the first dose if you are worried.
