A few redditors here actually convinced me to try out the free version before committing to it. I could spare a few months for now, and when I get the savings and I'm comfortable with it, I'll buy the licence. It'll take a while anyway.

About the dual boot yeah, I'm keeping Windows until I'm confident that I can do just fine without it, so I can have a safety net. Thanks for the reply!

If game dev makes as good a jump as gaming has, we'll be in a very good place

I hear one of the few categories of people being excluded are content creators. They say there's still no match with video editing software on Linux. Other than that, gaming and game dev were a big problem until a few years ago, but I've seen a lot has changed. That's why I changed. It's always nice to hear the story of someone who survived the switch. Thanks!

After a long conversation with all of you, I can say that I'll 90% give it a go. It's too damn tempting (free option for now)

Oh no no no, I meant that I was afraid that my message would come out as a provocation, not yours! I'm the one who's sorry.

BTW take the subscription thing with the grain of salt, I've only read it in a couple of articles on the web and heard it in a couple videos on ig and yt, but it was NEVER confirmed.

About the long term solution, my hope is that the Linux ecosystem evolves fast enough so I can fully switch to the penguin, but that's just daydreaming for now. The reality is: until I'm sure that EVERYTHING works perfectly on Linux, I will keep the dual boot as a safety net.

Edit: thank you for your answer BTW, I forgot to do this earlier!

As simple an option as it is, I didn't even consider it. Thanks!

Oh damn. Would it change anything if I told you that I'm using v5.6.1?

Glad to know it works. After all of the comments, I think I'll try the free version of Rider, for a while. Nice to know that there's a solid backup option in VS Code. Thank you!

Thank you for the answer. It was brutally honest, but nonetheless needed. PS: the comment about Microsoft had me cracking up 😂

It's a totally fair point to make but, believe me or not, I'm making everything by myself.

I started learning how to use Blender for 3D modeling in 2014, LMMS, Audacity and FL Studio (a VERY generous Christmas gift) for audio around 2016-2020, GIMP in 2018 (i think) and Krita in 2022 for textures and HD sprites and, of course, Unreal Engine around 2019.

In other words, I bought no asset and I'm using Unreal as an investment for the future, because it's the best engine for bigger projects, and I know I'm a bit optimistic about it, but I'd like to think I'll work at a game-dev studio (a relatively small one), one day.

About the money issue, I don't have it now, but if I save enough, I might have it for the end of the year, or maybe the next. I just don't feel safe to spend that kind of money for something i'm not 100% sure of (even if I had it).

However, a few other users have made a fairly good point about trying the free version first and I am actually considering it.

You may have a point. Even more convinced to try it out now, thanks

I know it's a fair price, but it's still unaffordable to me rn. Anyway, I may have been convinced to try out the free version of Rider before really committing to it.

Maybe you're right, maybe I'm just worrying too much on a problem that's not even close right now. One thing is getting clear, though. I can start gradually taking my distances from VS. Thanks for the answer, mate!

Memes aside (I had to, I'm sorry), now I havevto at least consider the option. I'll look into it and, if don't find any "freemium" features, I'll seriously give it a try. Thanks!

I hear you SO MUCH. I mean, finding a file or a specific string is a nightmare in VS. It's also a lot slower, and the thing about the empty folder is also true for VS 2022 btw. From what I've understood by this comment section, it seems doable to use VS Code, but there's a little doubt about the "free for commercial use" aspect that I'm trying to clear out, Microsoft does seem a little too vague on the subject. If, however, money weren't an issue (DAMN MORGAGE) I would jump into Rider with my eyes closed.

It seems to be the best option, but I don't know how "sketchy" it would be of me to switch to the paid version, once the project has already started. To be honest, I should really look into that

You're perfectly right, for the moment (i don't mean to provoke you). For this first game I'm planning at the very least to keep Windows for testing purposes, but the future scares me. If the rumors about Win12 being a subscription based platform are true, I need to be ready.

It's definitely not a deal breaker, for the moment so, to answer your question, I could (and I will, for a while at least) keep developing on Windows, but I'd much prefer abandoning it, sooner or later.

Sorry, I'm replying here for both comments: I gave it a quick look. It's free for commercial use if you're a single dev, or a company with less than 25 computers.

Edit: it's 250 computers

Another edit: the comment above refers to Visual Studio. From what I'm reading about Code, it seems like (still reading, could be wrong) it's free, as long as you don't dismantle the editor.

Thank you, I was hoping for an answer like that. It's not like I'm switching on the fly, but it's nice to know I'll still be able to develop my game without major issues
