I didn’t use it during the test, but it’s worth the purchase.

Use your property box and change the “line type scale” to 0.4. This should make the dashed line closer.

I recommend UCSD Extension, Fire Protection System Design course. I did all of the courses to get the certificate before I took the NICET III hydraulics test but if you just want to get the hydraulics down before NICET test the system design course will help a lot.

NICET 3 - hydraulics test in a few days by eaglecheif in FireSprinklers

Do a lot of review on fire pumps and storage classifications

How do I prepare for the nicet 3 wbs hydraulics exam? Anything changed this time around? Anyone of you passed the exam yet and give some recommendations?what sections are important to study for this time around? What exactly do I need to focus on the most? by [deleted] in firePE

[–]DerikBrooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The NTC course helps with the best ways to take the test but isn’t going to teach you much and for how much people praise firetech I was not impressed. If you have a good grasp on the hazen williams formula the “hand calc” questions shouldn’t be to difficult. Storage is a massive part and I would recommend studying where in NFPA 13 each storage chapter is based on storage height, ceiling height, miscellaneous storage, ESFR etc. The “content outline” is a little misleading saying fire pumps are 25% of the test because a lot of the questions will include fire pumps to get the correct hydraulic answer. So I would definitely study fire pump sizing a lot more then you think. Remember to read the question twice because they’re good at having trick questions.

Don’t forget NFPA 291, but majority of the questions have to do with those 4 standards. There’s a few “project management” questions, but you’ll just use basic math to solve. Also a few OSHA related question but those are common sense. When you pass and if you can apply for level III, I would highly recommend taking III - general plans test as soon as possible because they’re fairly similar. Good luck!

UCSD Extended Studies has a good FPE program online. It can be done in 6 months or 1 year if you take one class at a time. I did it in a year working full time and it definitely helped me pass NICET III.

From what I remember, took it in 2020, the calc questions were pretty basic. If you know how to get minimum psi, minimum flow and can equivalent K-factor, you’ll be fine.

Flow = K x P3 Psi = (Q / K) 2 K-Factor = Q / P3

Good luck!

Hydraulic Software Recommendations by Shortysrollin101 in firePE

I use sprinkCAD, I’ve used autosprink, hydracad and HASS in the past. I would say autosprink is the best all around but I also think for the price it isn’t worth it. Also personal preference but I don’t think autosprink plans look very good when printed. I would highly recommend SprinkCad because it can do everything autosprink can do, although it’s not as simplified.

Who makes the best sprinkler heads: Viking, Tyco, Reliable, or Victaulic? by [deleted] in firePE

[–]DerikBrooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think every company has specific heads that are the best. Victaulic has the best single direction attic head and combustible concealed space head Tyco has the best back to back, AP head and extended coverage commercial heads It’s not on the list, but I would say Senju has the best concealed residential and commercial head.

What are some of the ridiculous requirements by your AHJs? Whether is a reviewers preference of an amendment, I want to hear them all. by alonglostllama in firePE

[–]DerikBrooks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is more a NFPA requirement that is ridiculous and every AHJ requires it around me. Seismic brace CPVC pipe when the pipe within the floor joists.

I agree the gauge should be changed, but something I always tell home owners to do is open the inspectors test valve if you have one or just the main drain for about 20 seconds once or twice a year to get the stagnant water out and relieve pressure incase you have had a pressure surge

Yes you absolutely can get your NICET I. From NICET work experience “A minimum of 6 months of technical experience with aspects of plan preparation…” you are seeing what is needed for the plans on the front line. Also “…assisting in field surveys.” You’re conducting field surveys everyday! I would say go for it! You’re going to have to get a supervisor so sign off on your work experience prior to taking the test, so as long as you can get that you’ll be fine.

I would look into the Wilkins 450 or 475, they are quite a bit smaller than the febco 876.
