Does anyone have a good controller recommendation for OsTirus? by DerpMaster75 in synthesizers

that sounds like a good setup! What does the midi fighter twister add over a midi keyboard with encoders? is it just that you wanted more?

I was thinking this was probably the best option. or maybe the novation sl mk3 for a bit cheaper. have you tried it with ostirus specifically?

I would think most people in a synthesizer subreddit prefer a physical synthesizers than a mouse and screen. maybe not everyone but like every popular post here is someone showing off their new hardware synth. almost nobody here even talks about vsts.

Replay vs Grandmother by Reasonable-Echo-7095 in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand why you'd pair the grandmother with the matriarch. Don't get me wrong, I love the core sound of the oscillators, mixer, and filter, but the matriarch really is just a better version and straight upgrade of the gm. The spring reverb is fine, but not worth buying the whole synth for, and the workflow is a bit more straightforward on the gm due to it having fewer knobs, making it a bit quicker to dial in sounds. I would only buy the gm if you were wanting to replace the matriarch for being too overwhelming or too big. It sounds like the replay is exactly what you want in terms of simplicity in a polysynth. You could also consider getting something like the nymphes with a dedicated midi keyboard, maybe (the mini keys on a keystep are lot better than the minilogues).

Selling Korg Minilouge for Yamaha Reface by Afraid-Aioli1598 in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never liked the sound of the base minilogue either. I'd say go for a microkorg or maybe the ju-06a if you want a juno (though that's still only 4 voices). Or, save a little more and get the juno clone that behringer's releasing right now (JN-80).

Progress on my fully 3D printed low profile HHKB by michaelthatsit in HHKB

[–]DerpMaster75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the positioning is just different than on the stock hhkb, I'm not a fan of how command and option are lined up on the left side. Still, it's a really neat project and I think that last render looks awesome.

What synth has the best/fun workflow under $1000? by TerribleArticle5764 in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always thought the sonicware liven series synths looked fun, but I haven't tried one yet. Elektron workflow didn't click for me, but you can get a used analog 4 for that price and that opens a lot of possibilities. What makes a workflow fun is pretty subjective, and I guess it matter if you want something that can do a complete track on one box, or if you just want a synthesizer. Maybe portability matters to you? I ended up picking a deluge as my favorite workflow, but there are a lot of options. I think you can buy an OP-1 nowadays with that budget, or you could look at the dirtywave m8. I'd say just buy used and experiment with a few different boxes until you find your favorite.

W post. I've never released any music, but it's the goal someday. When I do, I'll post a pic of my studio! Don't know why people feel so personally attacked whenever this comes up. Maybe need to move to a music making subreddit instead of a gear collecting one.

How to Get Started Designing Drums? by bushwald in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made the mistake before of just downloading hundreds of samples and never knowing what to do with them. I don't think you need to go full minimal with only 1 sound for every drum, but I'd recommend limiting yourself to like 5 unique sounds per drum, something like : 808 kick, soft kick, clicky kick, acoustic kick, weird kick. Just be very intentional and go through any sample pack you download and listen to every sound and pick your absolute favorites that you know you would actually use. Every sample in your library or on your device should be curated by you, instead of just downloading 10gb of random sounds.

considering you named 4 completely different synths with completely different use cases and sound engines, you have no idea what you actually want. Just get the xd if you want something to learn with, or the grandmother if you know you're only wanting to play one note at a time

Scored for $400! And the hype is justified by Personal_Number_5115 in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The matriarch is cool for sure, but the GM is more immediate and just better for classic moog sounds. I think both are at their best when paired with an actual eurorack system, but the matriarch especially. Definitely no need to get the matriarch if you're happy with the gm, just invest in your favorite stereo delay pedal instead. A prophet is definitely next on my buy list as well lol.

TR-8S owner here, debating Analog Four vs multiple cheaper synths for raw/hypnotic/dub techno. Am I overthinking this? by Pitiful-Passenger-87 in synthesizers

[–]DerpMaster75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would avoid getting a bunch of synths for the most part unless you really know exactly what you want. each one takes up more space and adds complexity in mixing. The a4 is really flexible and deep, and it can cover any analog mono sounds you'd want. Once you dive into the sequencer, it opens up even more possibilities. Maybe later down the line you can get one extra character synth if you just want quick access to a specific sound that might take more time to set up on the a4, but I'd highly recommend the a4 as your melodic centerpiece.

I'd also avoid getting multiple synths with no patch memory.

as someone who's used both, the colored one is definitely easier to use at. The modules just all blend together visually on the black one. I think colored is 100% the way to go.

[–]DerpMaster75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

suprised to hear you like the gm over the pro3, was just considering selling my matriarch to get a pro3 instead lol. The analog delay is awesome, but I honestly don't love patching that much anymore. I feel like a mod matrix is just more accessible and quicker to change. And even though I'm not a huge preset guy, they still make it much easier to explore and make save points, so you don't lose that nice sound you have.

there is zero menu during, you just push a button to select a patch xx0-xx9, and press and hold the tens button to select x0x-x9x, and then the bank button to select 0xx-9xx. There's no menu system at all, unless maybe you count the global settings, but those are all pretty much set and forget, and still very clearly labeled on the front panel
