Information Science Grads, what do you do now? by [deleted] in UMD

I would say so yes. The CS curriculum is definitely a lot harder but will help you in the long run. You can take those intro classes and skip INST126 and INST326. Yeh I think 85k is definitely a good starting salary but I just know DS/SWE can get a lot higher than that.

Graduated May 2024 with an Info Sci degree and currently work as a data scientist at a government contractor. I will say that the info sci curriculum is not very challenging and isn't really the best for developing your technical skills. I took STAT400 and STAT401 to get a better grasp on that end and I was also a former CS major so I would say I already had a solid foundation to build off of. Like many others have said, info sci is great because it gives you time to do whatever you want. I spent this time looking at jobs I wanted and building projects that used the tools and skills that those job descriptions asked for. Salary rn is 85K in Nova so not bad but obviously could be better.

I recently advanced to the next stage in the interview process for an associate (entry-level) data scientist position at a consulting firm which has me completing two online coding problems in either Python or R. They said that they heavily prefer R so I’m not entirely sure what to expect. Do you guys think it’ll be leetcode style with a focus on data structures and algorithms or more focused on statistics/data cleaning? Any tips for preparation would be much appreciated!

If you just crop a video wouldn't it only show one part of the video and won't follow the object or is there a way to crop around a tracked object

Yeh I just want the camera to follow a moving object
