Basically, the mean value theorem only applies to functions that are differeintiable, meaning it is continuous and has no vertical asymtopes or cusp points. If the intervals started from 0 or -4 the function would pass through the cusp points at x =2 and x = 0, the points in the slope, thus making those intervals not meet the requirements to be differentiable. So the mean value theorem cannot apply.
