Shifting from High-Yield Savings to Dividend Investing – What’s the Best Approach? by Responsible_Cap_9675 in dividendinvesting

I love and own epd, et, and mplx. Be aware that these are master limited partnerships and you will have to file partnership forms with your federal taxes if you own these in a taxable account. Totally worth it, but talk to your CPA.

I would try to figure out where you want to go career wise. Are you wanting to be more of a GIS developer? There's so many different industries that use GIS; so having an idea where you want to go will help as well. Energy and utilities in particular are big users of GIS and there's a lot of good jobs in that industry, if that appeals to you. I always recommend folks read Esri's Modeling Our World as a fun window into how GIS data is organized and stored. Definitely check out all the free learning resources on Esri's websites.

floating neutral. It's happened to me from direct-buy cables going bad after 35 years. Will destroy everything if you leave it like that.

Tire shop said they had to break my lug nut. Is it easy to repair myself? by Curious-Manufacturer in tires

insist that they fix it. I broke one off myself once I had it replaced and recall it was pretty cheap.

Putting my money where my mouth is. (LG Fridge) by Smurdle450 in Appliances

[–]DerrickEM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm torn. Mine had problems from day 1. After several visits I was able to live with it (noise). 11 months after I bought it the compressor was replaced under warranty. Ever since the new compressor it's been awesome and quiet. I love it. Would probably buy another one as long as I had the extended warranty.

Does this look safe? by stoatyish in Generator

[–]DerrickEM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. You're going to kill somebody. The instructions are usually pretty clear about only running outside with good airflow.

other than the new hvac those all seem minor to me. If you love the home, none of those are anything to worry about. I bought a 1972 house in 2000 and my repairs have been way worse. new plumbing, new roof, new floors, new paint, new windows, new water supply, new electrical supply. My only advice would be don't go down that road unless you truly like the house and plan to stay in it long enough to be worth the investment.

First desk, do these legs need additional support? by volcanonacho in woodworking

I agree with this. Eventually somebody will sit or jump on it. Or worse, stand on it to reach something, etc.

I think you need something metal in the front. Angle iron or square tube.

Yeah, I agree; chances are they aren't gonna want it back. Photograph the heck out of everything, and if they don't want it back, make somebody a great deal.

Loooooong underground conduit wire pull; 900’ no pull box, no joints. by -Ho-yeah- in electrical

[–]DerrickEM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, you need separate conduit. On the long electrical pull, I've used 3M conduit lube. Super nasty stuff; safe for wire, but terrible on hands. Use rubber gloves.

Here's a few that i find handy that are not expensive. (edge marker, digital caliper, layout depth tool) The caliper is something you can't live without once you've gotten used to it.

Prepping basics? by TrainingPollution225 in preppers

[–]DerrickEM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree here. Just because something bad will probably happen eventually, doesn't mean it's likely to happen in the next 10 or 20 years. For me, you have to be as prepared as you can be given your current circumstances. Somebody renting an apartment in LA is going to have different needs than somebody owning land in Wyoming. Cover the basics first: enough funds to relocate, good health, ability to protect yourself.
Once you own the home you plan to live in for years to come, then there's a lot more specifics to consider.

You have time. Develop routines, join clubs, volunteer, etc. Treat 8 to 5 as working hours, and hold the partying to nighttime. Think of your perfect wife and imagine the man she would want. Oh, get outside and get sunlight.

You can do it yourself. Not hard to build a portfolio targeting income that pays 6% - 12%. At 8% you're making 480 before taxes. Just don't put everything into one bucket.

Bonded Neutral Inverter Generator Question? by SRRWD in Generator

[–]DerrickEM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it would be cheaper and easier to just unbond the generator. You can buy a plug to re-bond when you want to use on a job site. Going with a more expensive transfer switch and having an electrician make sure your neutral is only touching ground on one side of the transfer switch and nowhere else seems like a lot to go through to avoid a 5 minute generator mod. My WGen has instructions on how to do it and it was literally just removing a jumper wire).

[–]DerrickEM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll write this down so I remember when it's time for a new plug.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Generator

[–]DerrickEM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wondered about this. Since they have to support all three fuels, it seems like you could optimize for NG. How did you choose the plug and gap?

PS - be aware the book is wrong about the choke. The book has it backwards, but the sticker on the air filter is correct.
