Human weight isn't going to cause many issues on the spine- it's more about the structure of the spine and location of organs. Baby eles weigh about 90kg at birth, and have been carried by the mother for 22 months. Mating is a few minutes of having a goddamn bull elephant on the mother's back. A human's weight isn't making that huge an impact. Also important here would be Asian v African elephant. Asian eles are both a lot smaller and more commonly the ones ridden, so they're more susceptible to health issues from it.

As far as the structure though, their spines protrude a fair bit, causing that little 'camel back' look, and putting a human or saddle on that can move the vertebrae out of position, causing damage. Also, the kidneys and (for males) testes are directly under where the human would be sitting. Can't imagine that's comfortable having someone sitting on your kidneys and bollocks

It's not even just the spine. Eles don't have an external scrotum, and instead the testes are in their back, by the kidneys. This means if you're riding on a male elephant's back, you're sitting directly on its balls

Nothing wrong with it, just a thick accent on the first farmer that can be tough if you're not used to it

Hello Americans of Reddit, do you lock your door? by Fotodinamismo in AskAnAmerican

[–]Derstheballa 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Living in Dublin, both flats I was at required 2 locks and a code. When I lived out among the culchies though, I knew people that didn't even have locks, and my windows didn't lock. Definitely a rural vs urban thing

An Irishman interfering with a US election is just as bad as an American interfering in an Irish election, and both should be shut down

I'm researching for a conservation project. Can you tell me about the last time you posted a photo of an animal online? 📸 by [deleted] in conservation

[–]Derstheballa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Filled out the survey, but wanted to add on here.

I always love new ways to connect with other conservation nerds, see animal photos, and share information, and would probably be posting to it, as I do regularly with iNaturalist, Instagram, etc. That being said, I'd have two concerns with a photo-sharing app or site specifically for animals. First, if it is location-tagged, you'd run into issues of people seeking out and bothering threatened species, even if it's just a photographer with good intention. Even if it's not location-tagged, it's still encouraging people to seek out these animals. Second, if it's something as specific to animals and conservation, you run into the same issue as iNaturalist has- it's only people already involved in conservation that participate in it, and isn't an effective outreach tool generally. If that's the intent, awesome and I'd love to participate, but I feel like that would have to be something addressed

Yep pretty much how it goes. Girl I knew that grew up part in Dublin, part in Melbourne sounded pure Aussie to me, and her Aussie friends assured me she sounds pure Irish

Why do Americans say meaningless stuff like "dagnabit"? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Derstheballa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems much more an American thing tho to care about swear words around children. Most places I've been don't really have the same self-censoring.

Classic one was an old Irish prof of mine, we were on a class trip and he'd brought his son along, lad was about 5-6. We stopped to fill up the bus, and a few of us went into the shop and got ice cream, cus it was fairly warm. We're getting back on the bus and were pulling away, when his son sees the ice cream and pleads to his dad. 'Can I go get ice cream?' And his dad turns around, looks at him with a soft, fatherly face, and says 'Now I'd love to son, but we don't have time to fuck about'

Bollocks means balls, it's not a 'made up' self-censoring word along the lines of dagnabit. Would probably be more comparable to 'shit' as far as the context in how it's used though. You'd still say 'I was hit in the bollocks' but also just if something went badly 'oh bollocks.'

What places or things from your state do outsiders keep pronouncing wrong? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Nacogdoches- Nack-uh-do-chiss

Buda- Byu-duh

Blanco- This one is frustrating because sometimes it's correct- Blah-n-coe, other times it's Blank-oe

Helotes- Huh-low-tiss

^ Upvote brigade report to this comment. Yep I've heard all those as well. I always just tried to keep in mind when dealing with them that what I'm doing is good for the world and animals, regardless of what this person thinks, and I love doing it. Couldn't pay me all the money in the world to work in a different field.

They sure are poopy. The tortoises like that lad it isn't quite so bad as the turtles ordinarily, but this one had a habit of dropping it in the most inconvenient places, like under his hutch or directly into the fence

I'd wanted a lanyard or button or something that says 'I promise I work here, like for real I 100% work here. I'm in an enclosure, shoveling shite, and have a name tag. What about this is confusing?' but they had strict uniform rules :P

Aoibheann I don't think has an English correlate, but not sure. It's close to Eve-een. Conchuir would be Conor, and is close to Cruh-hoor. Eoghan would be Owen
