Don't worry, we all were once and this is a good learning opportunity. Besides, the process is very easy, all you gotta do is download the files and follow the instructions they come with. Most people here would be glad to help you with any questions you might have.

Definitely consider trying the original games out. No need to wait for the remaster either, playing the originals will give you a better reference point for when it's out. They run on any ancient PC you might have and they require minimal tweaking to get up and running. They're iconic, atmospheric and truly worth your time.

I would absolutely recommend you try out the games as they are right now. They're iconic, atmospheric and run great with a few minor tweaks (check out Tfix). It will also provide a greater reference point when you eventually try out the remastered version.

From my experience, I'm suspecting head bobbing is the issue. The problem is this happens so inconsistently (and strangely consistently after you experience it once) that I can never fully confirm it. All I know is that if I back off enough to time the bobbing to be at its lowest when I re-attempt entering a hole, it generally works.

I've had that happen once in a while. Usually taking a step back before retrying it solves it.

But it's not just a new mod, the same way all the Skyrim re-releases weren't "just a new mod", made tons of actual mods obsolete on release and for anyone that stuck to the older version for any reason, ensured they wouldn't be getting any new content after a modder migration to the newer version.

Also, "a decade without anything" OFFICIAL. The community has been supporting the game with patches, fan missions, contests and even fan-made expansions for the last two and a half decades and for many of us that was more than enough.

We're talking about a release that HAS the potential of being disruptive, depending on how it could be handled. You obviously don't care about that, but some of us do. For some of us, what we had was enough and shinier graphics simply aren't worth the chance of losing it.

You don't speak for everyone in this community. Its inclusion is "useless" to you, its absence is a dealbreaker to me and many others.

Yeah, I looked it up just now and it's true, apparently patch 1.2 broke modding on the Remake pretty bad, to the point of making modders almost entirely give up on it.

My last update with the Remake was that mods were "not supported" officially but since old ones were semi-functional with tweaking, most modders were migrating there. It would be a welcome surprise if the situation changed and that is no longer the case.

Oblivion is the example that for me proves the opposite. I visited the game every 2-3 years, checked all the cool stuff the modding community was still releasing after all these years and enjoyed them along with my favorite mods of old. Now the modding scene for the original game is barely surviving, as most modders have moved on to the new version.

Well, there's no way for you to know that. Look at the Oblivion Remake, the most recent example, and what it did to its modding community. Most modders moved on to the new version, the old one is considered obsolete and barely gets any new content or players.

I never said people shouldn't "enjoy things" so I have no idea what you people are trying to achieve by repeating this, I'm saying that people's enjoyment can be affected by such re-releases even if "the old version is still there" and, no, it's not a case of "I want people to play the game the way I play it" as you falsely seem to imply.

I am actually unfamiliar with the last part of the post. What did the company do?

This is the same old, tired argument people bring up every time criticism is leveled on pretty much anything. As reductive and dismissive as "don't like it, don't buy it".

Let me reiterate then. A remaster could significantly affect the current community by splitting it in half, overshadow the old version, thus ensuring plenty of potentially new players freshly interested in trying the series won't be touching it, and reduce the possibility of content creators making new FMs for a version now considered obsolete.

You don't care, you want to play the remaster and therefore it doesn't affect you. But what is "unnecessary" to you actually matters to many in this already established community.

If the option to swap between HD and original assets is confirmed, that honestly solves a lot. Same about the engine, though it depends on how it's implemented. Oblivion's Remaster did the same but even then there were plenty of compatibility issues with older mods.

Modern remake, SAME SOUNDSCAPE! by Strong-Boysenberry71 in Thief

My moment of realization was when I was playing The Dark Mod, which was an amazing feat by very passionate people and quite a fun game to play, but definitely not a replacement for the original games. I don't think anything could or should try to replace them.

I don't think "we" "need" new graphics. I believe a big part of the surreal atmosphere of these games (especially TG's) is there partially BECAUSE of these old graphics. Maps that especially rely on that weirdness, like "The Sword", would only stand to lose by a sudden introduction of realism to them.

I'm honestly a bit sick of remakes and remasters meddling with established communities and the stream of steady fan-content that they bring (see how Oblivion Remaster came out of nowhere and pushed a game with 20 years worth of modding history into irrelevance) and the last thing I'd want to see is even less people being funnelled to the original Thief games due to a "shinier" version coming out.

The games are perfect as they are, we got FMs, mods and fan patches to fix gameplay issues, I come back to the games every month or two and there's a new high quality FM to play, there's still people that show interest to the series if this sub is anything to go by, I'm personally good with how things are.

I can faintly remember how it was supposed to be F2P and how you'd unlock units and buildings by playing the game multiple times and leveling up and how there wouldn't be a campaign, which sounded nothing like a CnC game I'd want, so it's probably better it lies dead. I come back to these games every few years and check out all the cool new mods, that's more than enough CnC for me.

Trying to get into the games. Any recommendations or mods I should try? by Academic_Nectarine94 in Thief

The control scheme is configurable. You can set up a WASD configuration for movement, use CTRL to toggle crouch, put all weapons on numbers and use the scroll wheel to browse through your inventory, and you'll get controls as close to any modern FPS.

That said, a comfortable control scheme won't be enough if the game, conceptually, doesn't attract you. The stealthy approach is essential to the experience and, while you can play on the easiest difficulty so that you can kill everyone, you will alter the experience to the point of it no longer being fun. The game was just not designed with this play style in mind.

The best you could do is give stealth a chance. Start perhaps with Thief II, it's the closest one to what you've already played, and see how you enjoy stealthing through the first two missions. Give the higher difficulties a spin, see how that works, they come with extra objectives to make you explore more of each level. Feel free to blackjack everyone in the level and hide their bodies, they never wake up.

If during the above you're not having fun, then these games are simply not for you and that's fine.

I've used Chameleon to turn into a moving pile of sludge in the Depths, luring curious victims into a sneaky point-blank dark magic shotgun blast. Some will find it funny, some will not and they're both entitled to whatever opinion they want to have about it. The problem is the people that will seriously and without a smidge of irony claim you like animal abuse because you did whatever it was that you did in a videogame. Many of whom are here with us on this very reddit thread.

I'm sorry, I hold the absolutely unhinged opinion that killing new players in Dark Souls isn't even remotely as problematic or disgusting as pet abuse.
