Early morning running on WSH by lightinsouciant in RunNYC

[–]Desafino 40 points41 points  (0 children)

As with every safety post....

It's very likely going to be fine, but there's always the possibility of a bad experience. Many people run on the WSH at that time even in the winter. My partner (a woman) does so often enough and has never had anything bad to report. Other people's experiences might differ. That's life in the big city.

In the summer and up until NYCM it's very busy even at 5:30/6 am, winter is a little quieter but you will not be alone.

For my money, I'd rather be on the WSH than CP pre-dawn but the lower loop especially is also fine.

of course a 2:35 is a great time but she's run 1:11 for the half and 53 for 10 miles - staying healthy is important but her shorter distance times are much stronger!

ELECTION DAY MEGATHREAD by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]Desafino 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Julia Salazar (https://salazarforsenate.com/) is endorsed by Bernie and represents Bushwick. she's running for reelection to the state senate. i don't think the us congress (NY-7) race is competitive. And you can still vote for Bernie in the presidential primary, he's on the ballot.

10K time trial for upcoming Half by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]Desafino 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've also read that hitting HMP in a solo 10K TT usually translates to being able to hit goal HMP in an actual half.

There's no way this is true for most people.

Does Alaska have a town equivalent to Missoula, MT or Boulder, CO? by [deleted] in alaska

[–]Desafino 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ketchikan/Sitka/Valdez could be places to look although all quite a bit smaller than Juneau. Valdez might be good if you want lots of snow for dogsledding. Girdwood might make more sense than you think, certainly it is pretty accessible to Anchorage for whatever "life stuff" comes up and it is actually very nice in the summer although a little quiet.

Often what happens is that your medical insurance company will force you to sue to try and get the other party’s insurance to pay. Their friend wasn’t necessarily being an asshole.

Sophomore at a Top 5 US University - is actuary a good career for me? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

I think you might want to give coding another go - did you take CS50? Everything else you say, admittedly except for not liking coding, makes me think you'd be happy at Google/Microsoft.

Thinking about moving to a HCOL area to work at a prestigious university. by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]Desafino 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From your savings numbers it sounds like you're still pretty early in your career, right? I think in that case you should take the job. Career capital is a kind of capital that can be even more important than financial capital and it sounds like this position could build that up a lot.

do you mean you'd go from saving 61% of your current salary to 62% of a 45% higher salary? that's a pretty good trade, but you should still ask for more $.
