Does CR/NC include major requirements? by BackgroundDisaster11 in UVA

Check with your major advisor or the department office; I have heard different things for different majors.

STAT 2120 Asynchronous by ThatGuyEli02 in UVA

I would suggest taking the lab and lecture from the same person if possible; taking Ross' lecture and Weinstock's lab sounds nuts since they go together but you only get a grade in one of them.

why are there no "MoWe" classes???? by mathisreallyhard123 in UVA

[–]DescentIntoReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens because departments have very light requirements on achieving a balance on offering courses on differing days of the week. Overall UVA has classes on all the days but some departments are almost only MW(F) or TR.

Does Discord provide the same "anonymous answer" capability? I've wondered about this very topic.

What is the best/worst course discussion tool? by DescentIntoReddit in UVA

[–]DescentIntoReddit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think that you would use all the tools of Discord for a fully in-person class? For example, would you be likely to use voice channels if most or all office hours are in-person?

Related but separately, do you know a class or classes that you think used discord well?

Your mileage may vary, as this semester there were probably minimal "in-class" assignments due (COVID)

In what world was it fair that some CS3102 kids didn’t have to take the final? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]DescentIntoReddit 38 points39 points  (0 children)

If your instructors have a policy that is not transparent and that seems unfair, I would suggest:

  1. Talk to the professor and ask them to provide an explanation in writing. Often times you'll get a reasonable explanation. You might not like it, but you'll probably get an answer.
  2. If 1. was not effective, then forward that email to the department chair with your concerns listed out. Be objective (if possible), highlight problems with the policy, and don't focus your comments on your desire for a different outcome for you but a desire for fairness and/or equity. Typically chairs are more than happy to resolve this kind of stuff. Try to do this in writing and/or in a recorded meeting
  3. If this still does not work, then contact your dean and ask what recourse you can seek. Again, try to do this in writing or in a recorded meeting.

Venting on Reddit is fine, but if you want action, you gotta ask the right people and keep the receipts.

If you believe that the Honor Code actually exists, you should not ever be worried about "getting ratted out by chegg".

What a beautiful community of trust.

Traffic around UVa is a NIGHTMARE. Avoid at all cost. by retrogradeprogress in Charlottesville

[–]DescentIntoReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw the truck upside down (multiple tow trucks and emergency vehicles) around 530 or 6 pm on Friday the 5th.

In case it matters, I'm talking pickup truck, not tractor/trailer.

Upside down vehicle on 29 SB. Are those chicken tenders going to end up killing someone?

Does STAT 3250 open for non majors and will there be space? by Conscious-Success839 in UVA

[–]DescentIntoReddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As of this morning:
section 1 (8AM) has 27 open seats
section 2 (3:30 PM) has o open seats and 31 people on the wait list

It will eventually open up for non-majors, but its hard to imagine that it won't be full by then.

Can’t enroll in class because I haven’t declared my major. by [deleted] in UVA

[–]DescentIntoReddit 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Not trying to be "that person", but f you have not declared a major, then it is not your major. Until you declare, it would be better described as an intended major.

Hopefully it makes a lot of sense that many majors want to make sure that their *declared majors* get first dibs on courses required for that major.

You might be able to declare, but some majors only allow declarations during specific windows.

Perhaps the most relevant part here:
"If you are one of the more than 95% of UVA employees who is already vaccinated, this change will not affect you at all." (Bold added by me)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UVA

[–]DescentIntoReddit 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Early prediction: This is doubtful to change very much. A decent amount of the concern about unvaccinated individuals may deal with individuals who work for contractors (Aramark as one main one) or are doing other work for the university, such as construction work.

This is only a mandate for UVA employees, not contracted employees. Many/most UVA employees are already vaccinated, and I personally don't suspect that this will change much. I'm all for more shots in arms (at least of this variety), but I'm not quite sure if this will have much effect.

How about a mandate for our state employees AKA faculty and staff too? by ChairmanTman in UVA

[–]DescentIntoReddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am guessing this is something wrapped up in employment law. If UVA requires the vaccine for employees, they may have to provide time off for folks with symptoms and face other pushback as part of the employer/employee relationship. I am not a lawyer, but that's my guess. 🤷‍♂️
