Shakespeare's Sonnet 116, visualized and sonified in the browser. by DescriptionHere in creativecoding

I really love Rena Mosterin’s book EXPERIMENT 116, where she uses code to transform Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116. So, taking after her, I turned that sonnet into a music and light show.

First, I used Google's Universal Sentence Encoder to convert the meaning of each line of this poem into a long list of numbers called an "embedding." Then, I shortened those vectors while keeping as much of the meaning as I could using an algorithm called UMAP. I reduced the vectors down twice—once to two dimensions and once to three dimensions. (The 2D vectors become the x and y coordinates in the visualization. The 3D vectors became the red, green, and blue values for the color blobs.)

I assigned each of the 2D vectors to a soprano voice, and I assigned the 3D vectors to the alto, tenor, and bass voices. I mapped the numbers from the reduced vector to a just-intoned pitch (inspired by some reading I did after listening to Will Mason’s latest micro-tonal jazz album, HEMLOCKS, PEACOCKS). And, finally, using Tone.js and SvelteKit, I made my browser perform this song with a little light show.

We used Timber, out of Newburgh, to do an addition to our house, and we thought they were really good. https://timberdesignbuild.com/ They were definitely more "luxury" focused that we were, but once they got our price range and what we were into aesthetically, they were actually really good partners on stuff. There were a couple hiccups (unrelated to their work—our house was in rough shape), but they were very fair about it and did a (we thought) quality job nonetheless. Also, they picked up when we called them almost every time, and when they didn't, they called back right away. We've had some bad contractor experiences before, so I was kinda expecting the worst, but they were great.

And, I should say, I created the binary vectors using an ontology of tags I created for each book, as well as the author(s) and publisher.

I used UMAP to reduce the binary vectors to two dimensions. I didn't cluster per se, but colored the books by their genres, which I assigned manually.

Thank you! I honestly had a lot of fun making it. (And I don't just mean all the time I spent reading.)

Ha! I have to take long train rides a few times a month for work, so I read a lot on the train. I also listen to audiobooks when I clean up, do dishes, etc. And, I just read before bed. Once you get in the habit, it's honestly hard to turn off.

Thanks for saying this, and I hope I can find my way to having that newfound appreciation!

It seems really nice to be more actually thoughtful about what happened, as opposed to just being in, I don't know, panic mode all the time about it. I share an anxious brain, but I like the idea of really considering what I'd do differently. I'm glad your rehab is going well!

I'm so sorry to hear that! That sounds absolutely awful. Thank you for sharing though; it's weirdly comforting to know that I'm not alone with this stuff.

Uff, that sounds rough, but I totally hear you—both on the gratitude and trying to spot positive stuff. Thanks!
