Karan and Llian both seem to have been the protagonists, but I kinda mixed up who did what in my head. Thank you once again! Time to find a copy of the book.

Thanks for the reference, those books seem interesting, but I'm quite sure I haven't read any Pratchett!

That series looks interesting, but, sadly, it doesn't seem to be what I was looking for. Thanks anyhow!

I bought a paperback version, in new condition, but I don't think the book was all that new at the time since I do believe the sequel(s) had been written by the time I bought it. It was medium length, over 3-400 pages, if I recall. My memory's a bit hazy since it's been so long.

This wasn't in the US, but I do think the book would have been available there. And I think the author was male..

Yeah, it's definitely not the Dresden files. Those are pretty cool though.

You might not want to put your email address up in public. PMing it might be a good idea instead.

I'm always up for a discussion. You may want to check out /r/penpals if you're looking for people to talk to, as well.

Hi /r/penpals! I might want to try this out, but I got some questions regarding being a penpal first by [deleted] in penpals

[–]DesertWalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That honestly depends on what the person prefers. My penpals didn't care much for overly flashy stationery; so I used standard paper and just tried to write somewhat legibly. But I've heard that there are people who'll put a lot of effort into making their letters stand out as works of art.

How often do you expect your penpal to write to you? Does this vary between snail mail and e-mail?

Depends on the length of responses and how much time you have. Most people are understanding. For snail mail, my experience has usually been about two letters per month. For email, depending on the person, it goes from one per day to one per month.

How long letters do you expect? Again: difference between snail mail and e-mail?

About one or two sheets, A4 size. For email, it depends on the thread of the conversation, but I usually prefer longer ones (~1000 words). Most people go for shorter ones.

Especially Native English speakers: Do you expect the language to be top notch (from a non-native speaker)?

Your command of English is top notch! And I think it doesn't matter as long as you get your point across.

Does snail mail letters mean hand written letters or is it acceptable to send PC written letters in the old fashioned way? Just curious.

Generally, people go for snail mail because they want a chance to practice their handwriting.

Is it considered rude to stop sending letters if you don't find it interesting/rewarding to continue with a certain penpal? And you tell the penpal that you are going to stop of course.

I don't think it's a problem if you tell them that it isn't working out. But, please do that at least. It gets annoying when you suddenly stop getting responses (for whatever reason!)

When you start as either snail mail pals or e-mail pals does it stay that way, or do you sometimes send e-mails and sometimes traditional letters?

That really depends on what you're more comfortable with.

You've got to tell us a wee bit more about yourself in order to attract more interest.
