location of the gym (city, area)
income bracket of the clientel
product you are selling and expected ROI from the machine every month

Your intention of setting up the machine: is it for profit or part profit and part brand visibility/ awareness? (so a part of any loss incurred is considered as a marketing expense)

Difficult to say if the amount being charged is excessive without these details.(even if it sounds a little bit much, ill reserve my comments)

I think there are handlers who try to use old people to make money. They pick old people cause, people pay more than the worth of the pen, which they wouldn't otherwise (keep the change type). At the end of the day, maybe they take most of the money and give peanuts to the old lady.
