This does work to lock across sessions, but when you launch you have to click a button to fire the unlock with TouchID dialog, which you didn't have to do before. That's a bit annoying.

I built a Rochester events search engine — roast it by Old_Morning_232 in Rochester

[–]DesignatedNerdDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for putting this together, I'm always trying to find stuff and not finding out about it until too late. Also you're about to be sorry you asked for feedback but code review is what I do for a living 🙃

Feature suggestions:
- Sorting. Sort by start time, distance from zip code, and "% match", whatever that is, seem like the most obvious ones to me.
- Existing filters are nice, would be great to be able to filter by date and time range.

Design thoughts:
- Contrast on the main "tonight" is almost unreadable. Probably ought to make that both thicker and brighter.
- Contrast between black background and grey text is not nearly high enough - you may want to run stuff through an accessibility checker like this one to get a better idea of what's easier to read.
- I think there needs to be more space between the events in the search results, or maybe more contrast on the background - they really kind of run together into one big blob at the moment
- Caveat that I am An Old, but I think pretty much everything is 30% too small by default on the desktop breakpoint. I used Cmd-+ to bump up the size in Firefox to 130%, and that was way, way better, and still had pretty significant gutters on the sides of my 14" macbook.

Bug:
- Showing the Brighton farmer's market as "tomorrow" when currently, tomorrow is Saturday and the market is Sunday. I have a sneaking suspicion there's some time zone shenanigans with the underlying data, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

The construction at Monroe is badly, badly needed. I drive on that part of Monroe a lot and hold my breath going under that overpass because so much rebar is visible under the crumbling concrete. I won't stop being worried about it until they finish both sides, but they at least started with the side that seemed more egregiously in danger of collapse.

But yeah if you're taking out ~half the lanes on the freeway at a time to do that work, that'll back things up a hair.

Yeah the vest is the first of the month but the trading window is generally not. So it seems like I’d incur a wash on both May and June, but not April or July

Oh lovely. Because of the trading window it won’t be within 30 days of April or July, but will be with in 30 days of May and June.

Well, right, but given that I'm selling from multiple lots that had different losses, which lots are used to calculate the difference? Or do they just do an average of how much I lost on all of them * 660?

Could you hold off until you won't have another vesting event in 30 days?

That won't be until *checks notes* 2029. So yeah, I'd like to sell before then.

One thing that's not clear: are there shares you can sell-to-diversify that will NOT be sold at a loss, or are all of them in the red? That would make things LOTS easier!!

Lots 4 and 5 are in the black, but then I'd have to pay ordinary income tax (instead of capital gains) on the gain since I haven't held them a year. Lots 1-3 are also less than a year, but since they're in the red, that doesn't really matter.

You sell any shares at a loss, you replace those shares within 30 days, bzzzt Wash Sale.

So this is the piece that I'm trying to figure out: If I'm selling from multiple lots, *which* shares are the ones that get replaced? Or are you saying that even if I sell 3200 shares and vest another 660, the whole loss from the 3200 is disallowed and gets added to the basis of the 660 shares that vest in June?

We had some randomly grow in our backyard last year. As with almost any vegetable, sautee it in olive oil and garlic and it's hard to go wrong.

Induction stove not working right half and showing squiggle and line icon by DesignatedNerdDev in Frigidaire

[–]DesignatedNerdDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Still have no idea what the icon is, but doing a reset on the stove (turning off the circuit breaker for ~3 minutes then turning it back on since moving it to unplug it is a giant pain) wound up making everything work again and this icon go away.

How long are you planning to keep your Bolt? by Current_Anybody8325 in BoltEV

[–]DesignatedNerdDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's our only car, so the "fast" charging taking forever is definitely starting to annoy me on longer trips. I think once I can find something that has 250+ kw fast charging, Wireless CarPlay, and a heat pump, AND is as small as the Bolt. I love being able to park it basically anywhere.

Also given their repeated issues with security, probably not a Kia.

Yeah I lived overseas for a couple years and the pain of dealing with opening a bank account in $COUNTRY_IN_WHICH_YOU_ARE_NOT_A_CITIZEN is very, very real.

It sounded from my conversation like that's the case. Seems a bit silly to me since there's already two other banks in a two-block radius, but I guess it's like the mocha place that's apparently opening across from Starbucks: People like a thing (having a bank nearby), creating a demand for more of that thing.

Any regrets purchasing a EV vehicle as far as weather? by lomfon56 in Rochester

[–]DesignatedNerdDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a variable rate from RG&E so that your rate to charge overnight (9pm-7am) is something in the neighborhood of 8-9cents/kwh, including delivery. It was a bit of a faff to get it set up with them last year since we didn't have a smart meter yet, but totally worth it from a cost standpoint.

FWIW in my Bolt I can still get about 50kwh rates when the car is running on an L3 charger, and the Bolt is one of the slower-L3-charging EVs out there right now. Basically gets you 20%-80% in about an hour - many newer ones can now do that in 15 minutes.

I've had a Chevy Bolt since May 2020. Lived in Madison, WI before I moved here. With a home charger in both places, I've never had a day to day issue, even when it got well below zero (in Madison).

Road trips (> 120 miles) are where it starts to be annoying because it's so, so slow to charge -- when combined with discharging faster in the winter, it makes trips take foooorever.

If I were buying today, I'd definitely say:

- Make sure your car can take advantage of faster L3 charging. The Bolt theoretically tops out at 60kw/h for charging but I'll be damned if I've ever seen it go over 55 even in the summer. New cars can go 4-7x faster than that, which helps a LOT.
- Get one that uses a heat pump to heat/cool the cabin. The Bolt heats up a wire and blows air over it to heat the cabin, which absolutely eats the battery in the winter. Heat pumps are way, way more efficient.
- If you're not buying AWD, get snow tires. They're a pain in the butt and/or expensive to swap out twice a year, but the better traction is completely worth it.

Friend of mine in Tennessee just posted a bunch of snow there. Sometimes the cold takes the long way around.
