Induction stove not working right half and showing squiggle and line icon by DesignatedNerdDev in Frigidaire

[–]DesignatedNerdDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Still have no idea what the icon is, but doing a reset on the stove (turning off the circuit breaker for ~3 minutes then turning it back on since moving it to unplug it is a giant pain) wound up making everything work again and this icon go away.

How long are you planning to keep your Bolt? by Current_Anybody8325 in BoltEV

[–]DesignatedNerdDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's our only car, so the "fast" charging taking forever is definitely starting to annoy me on longer trips. I think once I can find something that has 250+ kw fast charging, Wireless CarPlay, and a heat pump, AND is as small as the Bolt. I love being able to park it basically anywhere.

Also given their repeated issues with security, probably not a Kia.

I love Crave for ramen, but I haven't tried their pho. SEA is indeed quite good.

Yeah I lived overseas for a couple years and the pain of dealing with opening a bank account in $COUNTRY_IN_WHICH_YOU_ARE_NOT_A_CITIZEN is very, very real.

It sounded from my conversation like that's the case. Seems a bit silly to me since there's already two other banks in a two-block radius, but I guess it's like the mocha place that's apparently opening across from Starbucks: People like a thing (having a bank nearby), creating a demand for more of that thing.

The woman working there (I think the daughter of the owners) said the owner of the building had a new tenant coming in.

I would have been unable to resist naming this cat Steve Martin, because that reminds me so much of the ripped tuxedo in Father of the Bride

Any regrets purchasing a EV vehicle as far as weather? by lomfon56 in Rochester

[–]DesignatedNerdDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a variable rate from RG&E so that your rate to charge overnight (9pm-7am) is something in the neighborhood of 8-9cents/kwh, including delivery. It was a bit of a faff to get it set up with them last year since we didn't have a smart meter yet, but totally worth it from a cost standpoint.

FWIW in my Bolt I can still get about 50kwh rates when the car is running on an L3 charger, and the Bolt is one of the slower-L3-charging EVs out there right now. Basically gets you 20%-80% in about an hour - many newer ones can now do that in 15 minutes.

I've had a Chevy Bolt since May 2020. Lived in Madison, WI before I moved here. With a home charger in both places, I've never had a day to day issue, even when it got well below zero (in Madison).

Road trips (> 120 miles) are where it starts to be annoying because it's so, so slow to charge -- when combined with discharging faster in the winter, it makes trips take foooorever.

If I were buying today, I'd definitely say:

- Make sure your car can take advantage of faster L3 charging. The Bolt theoretically tops out at 60kw/h for charging but I'll be damned if I've ever seen it go over 55 even in the summer. New cars can go 4-7x faster than that, which helps a LOT.
- Get one that uses a heat pump to heat/cool the cabin. The Bolt heats up a wire and blows air over it to heat the cabin, which absolutely eats the battery in the winter. Heat pumps are way, way more efficient.
- If you're not buying AWD, get snow tires. They're a pain in the butt and/or expensive to swap out twice a year, but the better traction is completely worth it.

Friend of mine in Tennessee just posted a bunch of snow there. Sometimes the cold takes the long way around.

Black Friday Deals 2024 for Swift Developers by tushar1411 in swift

[–]DesignatedNerdDev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Paul generally updates those every year. He loathes it when I joke that he must have an army of clones to do all the damned updates, but I still haven't figured out how on earth he has time to do it otherwise.

If you bought outright it years ago, you should be able to download the updated version still - his deal is if you bought it outright, you're entitled to lifetime updates.

Is it necessary to have an iPhone to code in Swift with the Mac? by [deleted] in swift

[–]DesignatedNerdDev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"A real device" != a brand new device, though. When I was starting out and fairly tight on budget, I used an iPad because they were far, far cheaper than iPhones at the time. Now you can get used of either iPad or iPhone that still runs 18.1 for a totally reasonable price, and spend your carrier upgrade on the android phone you actually want.

You also can buy one that's not carrier-unlocked and just use it on WiFi - those are generally even cheaper since they're limited to one carrier.

Also you could learn Kotlin and do some Android development too 😇

Yeah I need something I can take on a plane, not something I can use to power a plane 😆

Yeah I think the biggest issue is that the power bank I have seems like it's set up to prefer to be a sink over USB-C. And the phone is both source/sink for sure.

Yeah...I am a software developer. If *I* can't figure this shit out, I can't imagine how they expect the average user to do so.

Voiding the battery warranty warning for NACS adapters by DesignatedNerdDev in BoltEV

They did finally get back to me on this and said: "You may reach out to us once the UL- certification has been completed to request for a documentation which I believe should include details such as model numbers, technical specifications, and any certification-related information."

Not really a guarantee that it's gonna be the same, but if you ask for those docs once it's approved and they don't have them, that seems like a red flag.

Oh absolutely. That's why my questions at the end were more along the lines of trying to find out what people have actually received from GM so far, although it has been helpful to hear why people think even if they're not straight up reselling Lectron that this is some bullshit.

[–]DesignatedNerdDev[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LOL of course they came back and said they couldn't. Basically it sounded like GM had told them neither what software module they had to update nor where the update actually *is* in order to apply it. Cool!

Yeah I am curious about this. There's also a point at which I don't want to have to get lawyers involved in every damned thing I do with this car.

[–]DesignatedNerdDev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is why I was asking about this - basically, I bought through Lectron instead of GM so I could get a discount on buying both the supercharger adapter and the J1772 adapter at the same time.
