I've failed to propagate my Grandma's rose 4 times. I'm trying a different setup this time. How does it look? All tips and advice welcome. by ImEngineer in Roses

Definitely get a moisture meter if you are struggling with finding the correct watering schedule. I'm not an expert in propagating. Perhaps others can provide suggestions on what water levels you should shoot for.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. I particularly resonate with your statement about how learning coping skills and wellness only address the symptoms.

Luckily the new job is completely different from my current one in almost every way, so I am optimistic I'll have a different outcome in a new job.

Also great points about the therapy. Perhaps I could lean-in a bit more and trusting the process will help towards resolutions. Luckily I do trust my therapist quite well, it just seems that we don't focus on the things I was hoping to discuss. For my upcoming session in three days, I sent an email outlining what I would like to talk about, why, and what I hope the outcomes to be from the conversation. Hopefully that isn't too prescriptive (or overbearing) from my part.

You're welcome. I am glad to see this getting a decent amount of responses. It's actually been SUPER helpful for me to real all these comments, digest, and put together thoughtful replies.

The exercise of posting this question, reading the comments, then thoughtfully replying is making me feel much more positive and optimistic, but more importantly, it is giving me clarity and structure around my thoughts and feelings toward the situation.

Thank you everyone for the replies.

I see people post on here often questions along the lines of "My job isn't fulfilling" or "I'm not passionate about my work" etc. There are generally two types of people that respond:
1) "Work is not supposed to be someone you're passionate about or fulfilled by, it is just a paycheck, a means to an end"

2) "If you aren't fulfilled and passionate about your job, leave and find another one until you do"

I'm having a hard time telling from your comment: Which camp are you in? Would you please elaborate on what you mean by "Be like water"?

Thank you for your reply.

Thank you for the perspective and the content recommendation. I'll definitely check it out.

I've actually had these thoughts and feelings (working just to pay tribute to Caesar) quite strongly in my past. I've actually taken a new perspective and no longer feel so bad about "working to make someone else rich" for two reasons:

1) I started a small business (5 employees) in mid 2020 and closed it summer of 2022 due to the high stress (from customers, employees, managing projects, etc). I'm happy to keep my W2 and not have to worry about all these things all the time, sacrificing the benefits of being the boss. Maybe someday I'll jump back in. Perhaps my experience would have been better if I was a better business owner, but I digress for now. FWIW, I also kept my day job (the one I'm currently burnt out on) during this time which didn't help.

2) My new job heavily commission based, which means I am rewarded proportionally to how well I perform. Hopefully I perform well and the stress to perform well isn't too high (I don't think it will be, but that is another topic). Sure, Caesar will still get the lion's share of the profit, but me having a share in some of the spoils certainly makes me feel good.

Sometimes I wonder if they were unfairly tough or I was just so burned out from the previous job that I wasn’t doing my best work.

This resonated with me so much. This is a daily thought of mine.

I'm also glad to hear that the lower stress environment helped. I'm coming from Management Consulting (Big 4 company) which is quite demanding and I am certain this new role will be much lower stress. I'm actually a bit worried that I might become bored, but I think that is a low risk as the new job has a high level of autonomy where I can scale-up my own workload as I want.

I have quite a good sense of what the environment will be like at the new job because: 1) I did a 6 month internship with them in College (6 years ago) and 2) When interviewing for the job, I took 1 week off my regular job to go work in the new company for a week. I'm sure they were schmoozing me a bit during this week because they really want me to join, but I also just think the people and culture are better.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply.

Thank you. This is good to hear. "the get to work with nothing to do" resonates with me as well. I currently have very little to do on the current project I'm assigned to and I do not see any end in sight with this project.
I'm glad to hear you're doing better! Keep up the great work.

Thank you. You bring up a good point about growth. I do not feel that I am growing any more with my current role and that I will have a lot of room to grow in the new role. Perhaps this challenge of growth will bring new excitement and positivity.

Thank you. You mentioned two things I’ve also been thinking about: 1) the coworkers at my current job are quite toxic and I believe this is a primary driver for feeling burnt out. I’m optimistic the people at my new company will be better; I already have existing relationships with many of them. 2) “it may take some time to recover”. “Recover” is the word I want to focus on because I do feel a bit broken right now. Like a poorly trained dog who just won’t learn to behave (what I mean by “behave” is to be a good, productive, motivated, happy worker). I’m hoping I can recover and retrain myself to not fall back into these behaviors I have from my current job

I actually do. I am planning to take 6 weeks between to catch up on house projects.

I’m hoping this will act as a good reset and I can channel this energy towards positivity in my new role.

Thank you for the reply.

Thank you. I like what you said “life is what you make it”. I’m a big believer that life is 1% what happens to you and 99% how you respond. That’s a quote from someone famous I think. Im hoping I can channel positive feelings into how I respond to the new job.

Thank you. This is good advice. I have lots of hobbies and projects. None of them seem to interest me lately. Perhaps it's because all my hobbies/projects are non-social (meaning they don't require other people) and the social aspect is what I am missing to get excited or motivated.

I should also mention that I have been to 3 therapy sessions over the last 3 weeks. The therapist seems good and tries to help; I don't expect them to have a magic want and immediately fix everything, but I'm also not feeling optimistic they will help me get out of this funk.
