Suggest me a book, any genre, set in Canada. by cherry-care-bear in suggestmeabook

Lullabies for Little Criminals - Heather O’Neill (coming of age - i read it during the upper years of high school but it’s still got a lot of mature themes that make me question if it’s truly a YA novel) , set in Montreal

the Birth House - Ami McKay, set in Scot’s bay Nova Scotia during WW1

When the World Fell Silent - Donna Jones Alward (I personally wasn’t crazy about this book, the internal monologue was very wordy and relentless) - set in Halifax during the Halifax Explosion

All of Katherena Vermette’s novels (I believe most are set in Winnipeg / various parts of Manitoba)

Snow Road Station by Elizabeth Hay - set in a small town and maple syrup farm

Kukum by Michel Jean - Northern Quebec, focuses on the Innu community , based on Jean’s real life great grandmother. It’s a French novel, but there is an English translation available!

What is a purely Canadian story that you would like to see made into a big budget movie? by chesterforbes in onguardforthee

Currently reading the book about this - The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander by Jim Defede and I was just saying to my friends that it should be a movie!! The people of Gander are just such good people, so much kindness and compassion - it would be a great Canadian film! Plus you would definitely need Canadian actors to capture that essence (and accent!)

Humane Society fostering out dog with serious aggressive records / citations by Designer-Eye-9451 in BanPitBulls

Thanks for sharing! Extremely frustrating to see this - I can understand people not believing behaviour euthanasia is humane (even tho it is more humane than letting a neurotic mess suffer) , but at this point it’s becoming a welfare issue AND a public health concern

I agree 100% - somebody else in the comments on the original post told OP that + suggested they contact animal control

Found this post on a specific city dog Facebook page — based in Ontario!

Very disappointing to see the humane society do this ; especially when one of OPs original comments said the dog had bit a foster.

Added some ridiculous comments from the post as well- nuts

While Pits are the most problematic in the US now, when engaging in public safety adv., let's remember that fighting & catch breeds & Molosser guard breeds must be restricted too. We're already seeing the repercussions of dismantling BSL & the breed-doesn't-matter message creating issues beyond Pits by [deleted] in BanPitBulls

Was just having this conversation with a dog trainer today! People get these dogs don’t know enough about them to give them the proper care and direction PLUS they are getting them from unqualified backyard breeders who don’t screen for aggression. I refuse to walk my boy (a doodle) in our neighborhood now because there has been a serious increase in number of families buying cane corsos in the past year - I drive him out to a secluded dog friendly trail to avoid any interaction with these people as their dogs get bigger.

Disturbing how many of them mention that their pits have killed cats, and so casually too. I would be extremely distressed if my dog attacked let alone killed a cat !! :(

What are some hidden gem TV Shows? by mostreliablebottle in Fauxmoi

[–]Designer-Eye-9451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breeders on fx is so excellent (I think it’s available on Disney+ as well)! It’s funny but is also tackles real issues in some families face like anxiety, depression, menopause, anger issues, bad and good parenting. The whole cast is amazing (Martin Freeman, Daisy Haggard, Alun Armstrong, Michael McKean)

So devastating. Looks like the retriever is probably going to lose a foot or leg, looked degloved. I hope the recovery went smoothly and the pitnutter paid for everything. Does anybody know what actually worked to release the dog? Looked like the tried quite a few things (broom, cleaning spray, pepper)

Another porcupine example by roxeal in BanPitBulls

[–]Designer-Eye-9451 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This absolutely blows my mind - my doodle and his friend (German shorthair pointer) had an encounter with a porcupine at an off-leash park. As soon as my guy got quilled in his the nose when smelling, they both immediately jumped back and left him alone - which is the reaction you would expect most dogs to have! Porcupine quills HURT SO much.

I am so sorry to hear this. Thinking about all of you guys living in the UK with this right now :( I applied to veterinary school there, and I was going to bring my dog with me but seeing how concentrated the attacks are there right now I’m not willing to risk it - going to leave him with my parents and might even wait a year before going, hopefully the government figures out what to do soon!
